I just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora (the first book in the series).

MAN! It started slow, but once you get past the first 4-5 chapters, it just gets better and better.

Starting the second book now.

I agree but I loved he first few chapters as well.

The flashbacks to their youth was some of the best parts.

Now damnit Lynch... finish the next book

Lies was definitely the best by a lot.

Red Seas as overall pretty weak and disjointed but I thought the series got back on track with Republic of Theives.

I did almost stopped reading it after the second book. Glad I didn’t.

Great book for sure, I am curious to see where it goes - the uncontested power of the bondsmage in the world was a bit annoying for my tastes, about the only "complaint" I had.

ETA: Got about 100 pages into Book 2, last night and am definitely enjoying it thus far.

I think I am the only person that didn’t like this book. I liked the world building, the cities with the giant crystal towers were cool, but the story was just a big bag of meh to me. I kept thinking the protagonist had some master plot in motion, but he pretty much stayed incompetent to the end.

I think you need to revisit - certainly not incompetent, brash and reckless at times sure.

I'm new to the Lynch saga - but the last paragraph of this post leads to some potentially exciting interpretations.

Keep reading. You're in for a surprise.

I really enjoy the series, and I've been looking forward to the next book. Lynch is taking his sweet time with it, though.

Also, his short story A Year and a Day in Old Theradane (Link to full story) is a short, fun read. Check it out if you're a fan of Lynches work.

Sorry, man, as a general rule, I can’t do fantasy, if that’s what the series is about.

I'm not sure if I'd call it a fantasy novel. The setting is more of a steampunkish Victorian pseudo-fantasy. It's more of a heist novel with some fantasy elements.

I am, just finished the second book - not sure what people's huge issue with it was, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really liked it too. If you liked the second, you'll love the third. Remember what I said about being surprised?

I mean I'm pretty sure I have an idea about what is coming in a general sense. But i'm a bit of a nut about story structure and dissecting how different authors set up the flow of long series. Keep notebooks about the way people handled things that I enjoy and stuff from books and movies I see - i have a general story outline i've been working on for a while that I use the notes to help guide me in interesting directions.

Going to buy book 3 later today but my guesses on book 3 content - so potential spoilers below and some subtle references to book 1 and 2 stuff:

The bondsmagi will obviously be the main antagonists - I assume the Falconer has in fact figured out how to get around his newfound disabilities.

We finally get to meet Sabetha - was thinking it may happen in Book 2, but can't see why he would push it another book. He could play this a few ways that would make sense, fighting the bondsmagi, prisoner of the bondsmagi or somehow working with or being a bondsmagi.

I also think there is more to Lock Lamora than we are lead to believe. Hoping it isn't "noble lineage" but I would imagine he has to have some sort of magical or unknown abilities (best way for him to get out of the situation he was left in at the end of book 2).

Pretty good theories.

Book 3 won’t disappoint.

I was not a fan of book 2. Was OK but I thought the pirate adventure didn’t mesh with the casino heist. Think it would have been better to just stick with one of those story lines and maybe revisit the other in its own book.

And I read it immediately after Lies and here was no way it could be that good.

The casino heist did fall flat IMO - just sort of an out of left field ending to it which felt rushed. The pirate stuff was really well done and I loved it - don't see a ton of that in fantasy these days.

The Redwall series (if you read that when you were younger) had a decent bit of that. Prince Caspian but a lot of the big name series like Malazan, Wheel of Time, etc. don't really have dedicated and in depth seafaring portions.
