Once you finish all of the Abercrombie books in the blade itself world, you might want to check out Mark Lawrence's Broken empire trilogy as someone else mentioned. It is similar in the gritty, well written feel.

The Black Company by Glen Cook is a good old school gritty series as well. Robb J Hayes is a good Abercrombie lite author, and Nicholas Eames has a similar feel as well. Miles Cameron's traitor son cycle is a good one as well.

Steven Erickson's Malazan series is very good as well, but he tends to be love/hate for people. But it's very gritty, but high magic rather than low magic like Martin and Abercrombie.

I have never read sci fi or fantasy before other than ASOIAF. But recently picked up and finished Red Rising because somewhere on this board I was told it would be a good ease in to the genre.
I am about 2/3rds done with Old Man’s War by John Scalzi and I am really loving it. I think I will try to make it through all of the books.
Are there any other books or series similar to Old Man’s War?
I have bought Dune and Leviathan Wakes.
I was also recommended Starship Troopers.

The first couple of pages reminded me of why I loved the First Law Trilogy so much.

"He'd never laid claim to being a brave man, and he'd only gotten more cowardly with age. Strange thing, that, the fewer years you have to lose, the more you fear losing them."

Curnden Craw is such a great character. He may be the most relatable character in the whole series to me.

You could start something like The Expanse series.

You've bought Leviathan Wakes, which is good, because the expanse series would be my top suggestion.

I'd also suggest the Vorkosigan Saga by Bujold.

We are Legion (bobverse books) wouldn't be exactly the same, but might be a good old mans war adjacent book series.

It's fairly new with only two books so far, but the War formed Stormweaver books by Bryce O'Connor are somewhat similar to red rising and very good.

Was gonna scan through the board history again for some recs but any of yall read the poppy war? That popped up on some threads when I was reading first law. Last couple years I’ve done Malazan, Sanderson secret projects, first law, red rising, and finishing covenant of steel prob today or tomorrow. It sounded interesting enough of library has it, but might pivot to something else.

I'm about halfway through the audio version and Gorst is my favorite character so far. His inner dialog has made me laugh a few times. Craw is awesome too.

I wasn't a huge fan, bailed after the first book. It wasn't bad, just wasn't great. I'd read the Jade Bone Saga by Fonda Lee or Sword of Kaigen by ML Wang for some good Asian style fantasy, both are outstanding. Or the Beware of chicken series for some good fun, though it's still ongoing.

Finished Before They are Hanged the other day (book 2 of first law trilogy). It improves on the first book in every way. Really good stuff. Logen Ninefingers, Glokta, West, and Jezal are such amazing characters, and I’m absolutely in love with all the Northman. I was obsessed with the series “Vikings” and I pretty much picture the Northman to be the whole cast from that show so it really scratches a sweet spot for me

Only complaint was how pointless the journey west turned out to be, besides creating a love interest between Ferro and Logen. Unless there was another hidden purpose for it that hasn’t been revealed. I don’t fully trust Bayaz and feel like he’s up to some shady shite and could be the one behind the murder of the Prince. Also, Abercrombie is doing an amazing job and subtly letting you know there’s something sinister going on with Quai. At first I thought I was over thinking it but 100 pages into book 3 and it’s starting to become more obvious. Can’t wait to find out

Haven’t enjoyed a fantasy series this much since I read the dark tower years ago. Can’t put it down

For fantasy I've been re-reading the Amber series by Roger Zelazny. It's been about a half a century, but it holds up pretty well. He actually did an amazing job of creating a world that hangs together REALLY well, well before physics came up with the Multiverse. The first 5 books (Amber) are legitimate classics that everyone interested in fantasy should read. Neil Gaiman and JRR Martin were friends of his and it shows (in particular in the plots of JRR Martin books). The second 5 books of Amber (Chaos) were not as good but more of an afterthought and still fun. Zelazny still is one of my favorite authors of any genre.

Zelazny was the best. Amber is great as you said, particularly the first 5 book series. A night in lonesome October is a great fantasy book as well.

Lord of Light by him might be my favorite Sci Fi novel of all time, it's definitely one of my top couple.

It's certainly mine. I loved having to figure out what the back story actually is, which really takes a few reads. The blending of mythology, Buddhism, Hinduism, and sprinklings of Christianity and Islam in a very different world is a lot of fun.

If I could only suggest one, I'd start with Abercrombie's First Law series. The first book is The Blade Itself. I love that book but it's pretty much the whole board would agree that it really picks up and gets you hooked in book 2.

finished The Blade Itself last weekend and started Before They Are Hanged last night.

strong rec!

Just finished the first book in the Jade Bone Saga and it was excellent. Almost a Godfather-style spin on Asian fantasy.

The Sun Eater series gets better as it goes. I’m on book 5. Red Rising, First Law, Three Body and I’d say Sun Eater is the most entertaining

That is some high praise as red rising and first law are some of the greatest and most memorable stuff I’ve ever read
