You can order a copy of God is Not Willing - first in Erikson's new Witness trilogy here to ship July 1 (about Karsa but Karsa is not in book 1). Comes out in November in America but this place has international shipping.

Hmm, weird choice. Hopefully he gets it back together with this series, his last Malazan book (second book of the tiste andii prequel series) was straight garbage. One of the few books I've quit on half way through it was so bad (so bad his publisher wouldn't let him finish the series and made him start writing the Karsa series).

Might check this one out and see if it grabs me like the first series did.
I finished it, and it's by far his best work. And I really like the faithful and the fallen as well. But this was a noticeable, large improvement in his writing. I highly recommend it. But now I'm back in that terrible place of "waiting for the next book".

Ya I like to wait for stuff to finish up for the most part. Have a few loose ends out there but not too many

That’s good to know. Will check it out.
And at least Gwynn has consistently finished his series and done so in a timely fashion.
He doesn’t seem like the type to leave his work unfinished like a few other fantasy authors

Im tryng to finish the Foundation trilogy before the series starts. Should finish up book one tonight.
So im guessing that the show is going to use all 3 books for one season. There is no way you could do a show based off the 1st book. There is ZERO character development and it jumps around and is semi-hard to follow for an easy read.
I love Asimov, and I can definitely see how this influenced Star Wars, but its probably my least favorite book of his that i've read so far.

Finally bought some stand alone books for The First Law series. Debating on rereading the trilogy first before going straight to the stand alone. That trilogy is one of my favorites of all time, but my memory is so bad i've forgotten a TON of it.

Interesting, its been a while since I read it (think I am going to re-read the main three here soon). I didn't find much issue with following what was going on personally.
The time-scale jumps being used definitely impact the ability for character development but I enjoyed seeing the changes in the setting / society during the time scale jumps so that sort of made up for it for me - kind of similar to 3 body problem in that regard although you get to stick with characters a bit more in that series I think. Also, if memory serves correct, the next 2 books you get to stick with certain characters more consistently.
I'm not sure exactly what the initial season will include - I think all 3 is too much for one season but would work well for two I think (depending on the episode count). But there are additional stories outside of the main 3 that may include additional elements in it.

Anyone read R A Lafferty?
R A Lafferty
Saw an article about him in Wired magazine. Sounded like an interesting writer.

Greatcoats SPOILERS (sort of):
Picking up on the greatcoats thread discussion, but while I loved the series overall, I don't think the continued raising of the stakes felt necessary or very fluid. Mainly the last book all the sudden having this big outside threat jump in was a bit jarring.
Its been a couple years since I read it but I finished Book 1 in a single sitting, Book 2 I loved (although the greatcoats lament scene was a little too much for me). Book 4 was a solid conclusion but wasn't quite as good as the rest of the series.

I only made it a couple of chapters into Book 5. It just got repetitive and grimmer and grimmer. I liked the series a lot but I had just had enough at that point and sort of lost interest.
I am reading book 1 of Spellslinger and I like it a lot. I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate.

Ya it was definitely way more on the grimdark side than I typically go for. The humor was necessary to carry through for me.

Anyone read The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlmann I think his name is? Relatively recent release.
I thought it was really good, particularly the way the dialogue flowed at times from the main character. I think its the start of an ongoing series though, so theres that.

Nice, i'll keep an eye out for it - usually wait for a finished series (or at least likely to be finished) unless i hear just awesome reviews.

It doesn't really suffer the same way. While I liked the greatcoat series start to finish, it definitely becomes more grim and has less of the wonderful humor as the series goes on.
Spellslinger keeps that sense of humor throughout the series.

Quick question on Malazan. I'm getting into Bonehunters reread and read my first Esslemont book right before - knight of knives - which provides a lot of good context for characters.
Do his other novels sort of flesh out the main series in a similar way?
Do his novels have a driving narrative flow or are they all single volume stories before hopping to the next, different story?

One of them is kinda a separate novel on it's own that involves ally of the former bridge burners like spindle, picker, and some other Malazan characters (orb, scepter, throne maybe?). The rest of them tell a semi connected story following the story of different members of the crimson guard (iron bars group and shimmers group as she hunts the disavowed).
Then the ascendancy trilogy is set before the series starts and shows how Dancer and the emperor start to come to power.

I did, I liked it a lot. Fantasy with modern dialect, humor, and not taking 1000 words to explain what color the walls of the prison cell is. I've been recommending it to friends who arent even fans of fantasy. Rao.
I'm currently plowing through the Dresden Files - on Blood Rites. Butcher apparently hit a rough patch in his life and really got into watching some porn.

Fully agree that it was nice not to have pages of descriptive nonsense that just clutters the novel.
I gotta decide whether or not to fully commit back to Dresden Files. I followed along through like 10-11 books but thought the series was dropping significantly whether due to Butcher's getting tired of it or just losing his plots. Also think Butcher screwed up in terms of highlighting the wrong characters and not others who were just much better or more interesting.

I feel like the series isn't worth reading until around book 7 or 8. I love the 13-15 stretch.
