But I think the decent fourth book and the really good fifth book bring the series as a whole up to the point of a solid read.
Uhh I thought this was a trilogy when I finished the third book around 2015. Didn't realize there were more.
Coincidentally I've been thinking about rereading the first one.

Lucked out and checked the local library for Greatcoats. They had all 4 books in (which is rare right now with COVID). Reserved all 4 and picked them up yesterday. Tore through the first one yesterday, woke up at 3am with insomnia and finished it this morning. Now on to the rest of them. Definitely an enjoyable read.

At that point it was a trilogy. He just continued the series with a book last year and one that just came out.

Haha i did the same thing - finished book 1 in 1 long sunday afternoon session.
Finished listening to Elantris today - it was solid, had some stuff that pulled me out of the story a little but and i wasnt crazy about the characters outside of a couple secondary ones.
That is the one knock on sandersons stuff, he doesnt have a ton of characters that i fall in love with.

Yeah, outside of Wax, Wayne, and Kelsier, and maybe some of the reckoners characters, I can't really think of any standouts. It's really his world building and magic systems that carry his books.

I like dalinar and i liked kaladin early and sometimes characters grow on me in a 2nd read so that could change. I pull for kaladin but dont really like him for some reason

I've only read way of kings (decided to wait until he finished all 5 books of the first set to read anymore). I remember sort of liking both characters at the time, but after 8-9 years I couldn't tell you a single thing about either character.

His chapters can be tedious when he's depressed. Especially after Way of Kings.
But I haven't had an issue liking Sanderson's characters.

I don't not like them, at least I like most of them (looking at Shallan) - but outside of Wax and Wayne, he doesnt' have characters that I fall in love with or that I would mention up there with the best characters in fantasy - at least in terms of main characters. He does have a lot of funny / interesting side characters.
Still love his books, just something i've noticed having gotten through a lot of his books.

Im listening to the shadow campaigns right now and I’m loving it but it’s guilty of my most petty yet wildly infuriating pet peeve in fantasy books.
I absolutely despise when authors are writing a totally fictional world with a totally fictional country and still use the real world names for months of the year.
Yea sure ok this place just magically uses the word April like we do.
It ultimately means nothing I know but it drives me crazy

Of the main characters, I really only like Dalinar. However I love Lopen, Rock, Lift, Pattern and Vivenna.
Then there is Moash... frick Moash. But I hate him so much it's a good thing. I haven't read the second Mistborn triology yet so there may be characters I really like there too.

Definitely has his best characters - big reason why its my favorite of his. It is different as it isn't the same kind of huge epic fantasy book, the series is set up more as a mystery type book with sort of a thriller pacing, but it just works really well. The interplay between the two title characters is fantastic.

Anyone here read the Baru books by Seth Dickinson? Just started the first one, The Traitor Baru Cormorant, and its really intriguing so far. Curious if the series holds up. Also curious if the 3 books are a complete series or if its going to be a longer ongoing one.

Just found out book 9 of the expanse will now be released in 2021. Was hoping we’d get it this year.
Title: Leviathan Falls

Yea was a bummer. I read the Revelation Space series to fill the Expanse void and it was, eh, it was not quite enough to fill the void. Idk what else to read. I have the Three Body Problem but I also read ahead on wiki to see the story before I got it and Im not sure I want to read it.
So Leviathan Falls being delayed is a bummer. Might have to go with the new Halo book when it comes out which just aint the same.

I just started To Sleep in a Sea of Stars.
A little over 100 pages in and so far so good. Thinks it a stand alone novel not part of a series thought the author has said he some other ideas in the same fictional universe.
Hopefully it keeps the pace and doesn’t go off the rails at the end
Very reminiscent of the Expanse. So far some similar tension like in Leviathan Wakes

Sanderson Tweets "On To Skyward 3" - looks like he has finished the novella he was working on.
Sometimes I wonder what I could get done if I was a Mormon with no vices. Then I realize I would be just as lazy without the bourbon and porn and just tip my hat to ole Sanderson.

I think the real question is - what all could you get done if you were paid very well to do something you are incredibly passionate about.
