I also really liked the Ender's Game series. Ender's Game is itself a rather accessible read, but the trilogy of Ender's life after that volume is deep and challenging.

Coincidentally, there is a new book coming out next month that will tie up the loose ends of the Ender and Bean sagas.

I just want them to finally release the 3rd book in the Second Formic War series.

Thanks. I knew that was coming out at some point, but I didn't realize that it was next month. Yeah, I've read all the Ender and Bean books, but I may need to reread some stuff, as it's been a while since the book with Bean's kids and his death.

My suggestions

The War against the Chtorr - David Gerrold - I think he got to book 4 or 5 and never finished - but the first one is enjoyable.

Starship Troopers / Friday - Robert Heinlein

The Alex Benedict series - Jack McDevitt

Armor - John Steakley

The Forever War - Joe Haldeman

Ringworld Saga - Larry Niven

This board put red rising on my map. This thread made me put it at the top of my queue. I’m midway through the 2nd book now and it has been phenomenal. Thanks for the rec.

If you want some easy and fun space based series.. look at Chris Kennedy and Jay Allan books.

2) seveneves

Then maybe Anathem which I liked a bit more than Seveneves. It's kind of a weird mash up of The Name of the Rose, old fashioned Sci Fi, social satire, and Greek philosophy. Mostly I really like Stephenson, Cryptonomicon in particular (it's not sci-fi, though).

I'll second two that have been mentioned and might be my two favorites:

Lord of Light - Zelazny
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - Heinlein

I've been on an Ursula Le Guin kick lately. Left Hand of Darkness is a good one. She and Zelazny may have been the two best writers that wrote sci fi (Vonnegut too, though I really don't think of him as a sci fi writer). Le Guin and Zelazny are not really old fashioned nuts and bolts space travel sci fi writers. Heinlein does that very well and was prolific with it. But it also gets dated.

Philip Jose Farmer wrote some interesting stuff, Riverworld and the World of Tiers in particular. And Venus on the Half Shell using the name Kilgore Trout with Vonnegut's permission (Kilgore Trout was a Vonnegut recurring character who was a sci-fi writer (based on Theodore Sturgeon).

I've been considering diving into Anathem. Not sure if I want to do audio or print. The audio would allow me to take advantage of my long commutes.

You might like Children of Time, it is a somewhat similar tone to Seveneves. I enjoyed it.

I really liked Ringworld, bought the next one in the series but haven't read it yet. Personally, I love Heinlein. Haven't found a book of his I don't like.
