Recommendations for a bloody, violent Western novel that isn’t Blood Meridian?

You've read McCarthy's Border Trilogy, I take it?

As someone else said, The Son. Also might want to check out Shadow Country by Matthiessen.

And if you haven’t read it, grab Empire of the Summer Moon immediately. Nonfiction, but reads like a McCarthy novel.

Gates of the Mountain by Will Henry. A slightly different version of Lewis and Clark expedition. My favorite. Not bloody. Sorry, but great story.

While you're at it add The Burning Shore by Wilbur Smith. Hard to put down.

This is the most violent one I've ever read, and it's based on actual events and first hand accounts. Savages are brutal, but this doesn't pull any punches about the atrocities committed by Whites, either.

Go for Empire of the Summer Moon - it is nonfiction, but just as violent and interesting as any novel.

Well - see I was beaten too it

Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series. Fantastic reads. Read all four in the order of the story line which is not the order in which they were written.

Is this the book the TV series with Pierce Brosnan was based on?

I was going to suggest this but I didn’t know if it was violent enough. I mean I know it’s pretty violent, but you don’t have quite as many gruesome/dark descriptions like Blood Meridian.

Thanks for a starting this thread, I just finished the Blood Meridian audio book, wow. Hard to keep track while listening and just got the book to read through it and study it a little more.

Wraiths of the Broken Land by S. Craig Zahler is excellent. It's over-the-top in a good way.
