Question for those who have read Fire and Blood regarding the Dance.
Posted by HangmanPage1 on 10/20/22 at 6:55 am00
When Kings Landing fell and Rhaenyra had to sell her fathers crown for passage on a Bravosi ship back to Dragonstone, I wonder why she made that judgement.
I know she had hoped to hatch more dragons. But even if she was successful, it would have been years before they were of use. Why didn’t she flee northward towards the Riverlands and the Starks? She wouldn’t have had to sell off her heirlooms and would have immediately provided her with forces. Remember even after her death at Dragonstone, the Lads from the Riverlands and Cretan Stark still carried her banner and finished off the greens. She should have been at the head of that army with Aegon the younger.

If I remember correctly, there were still green armies west and south of King's Landing. If she tried to escape by land, she may have been attacked. She also had no reason to believe Dragonstone was unsafe. She can get to Dragonstone, regroup, and figure things out. Little did she know that she was just an Uber Eats delivery for Sunfyre.

The general belief is that Dragonstone was her power base and she wanted to return there.
She was asked to head to Gulltown (the Vale) or White Harbor (the North) but overruled those suggestions.
As far as the heirlooms go, she was deep in enemy territory (Crownlands, Stormlands, etc), meaning an overland trip to the Crossroads and then either up to the Neck or through the Mountains of the Moon would have been exceedingly dangerous. She lost protectors on her way toward Dragonstone and that was considered much easier to reach than other possibilities.

I think everyone here already nailed your question so I just wanted to touch on a slightly different point: what a shitshow their time in King’s Landing was.
The fact that they managed to lose ALL of their remaining dragons was an absolute travesty in policy considering the war should have been all but over at this point.
I will be very curious about what the old man/prophet character who incited the mob to kill the dragons is like. I guarantee he was a plant of someone’s.

The consensus seems to be he was a plant but not whether he was one for the Faith of the Seven, the maesters of Oldtown, or both.
The maesters likely controlled the whole kingdom for a time during Aegon III’s regency, too, due to deaths, resignations, people leaving to deal with other issues across Westeros, etc. Grand Maester Munken is the only regent who was alive and in place during the whole of Aegon’s regency.

Just finished that part of the book. Wow.
So the Targaryens nearly wiped themselves out, lost all of their dragons, and crippled the realm?
