'll mention another favorite by my least favorite author, Thomas Pynchon. "The Crying of Lot 49", like most of his work, is not well written, but the theme of the book presages the effects of the knowledge revolution on the world at large. It was one of my favorites for years for that reason, and I've given many copies away. Few have liked it. It is a short book, easily read in a day or two. I'd be interested to hear anyone's opinion on it.

Didn’t do it for me. At all.

Some interesting facts about the old cartoon version of animal farm...

Under the umbrella of operation mockingbird, the cia procured the movie rights from George Orwell's widow. Part of her terms were that she get to meet Clark Gable, which the cia arranged. They hired Disney cartoonists to make the film.

This is the reason for the different ending...the cia intended to release the "harmless" cartoon in eastern bloc countries in an attempt to foment rebellion. Unfortunately for the cia, the Soviets had overseen violent crackdowns on the disgruntled eastern bloc populace, so the cartoon gained no traction. It did, however, bolster pro democracy and anti communist sentiment domestically.
