Just starting the Mistborn series and I have a question

Maybe it is because I just finished the Malazan Book of the Fallen series but The Final Empire writing style seems to be a little juvenile? Is it just Sanderson finding his way as a new author when this came out or is this his writing style?

Yes.
It is part of the reason why I have a hard time going back and reading the original trilogy and love Era 2 so so much more.

Yeah. It feels a bit YA at times, especially Wells of Ascension. Era 2 is awesome though.

Wayne is my favorite character of his and Michael Kramer does an awesome job voice acting him in particular.
Well him and Lopen, but I think they may end up being related somehow, idk.

That has always been a criticism of Sanderson…his style is YA-ish. Mistborn was the first fantasy series I read so it didn’t bother me at the time but I think it would now on a re read

Era 2 is great, and I’m super engrossed in Stormlight. It took a little bit to get get going but now it only drags for me when POV switches to a storyline I care about less.

It's mainly this in terms of the original Mistborn trilogy, though he's still only a bit above average in terms of characters and personality even now. His strengths are world building and story really, not characters.
Though he has numerous really well done characters in the Stormlight books, and Wayne from Mistborn era 2 is absolutely fantastic and a top tier character.
I've never really understood the extreme love for the original Mistborn trilogy for this reason. I have to guess for many it just might have been one of their initial forays into fantasy. Mistborn era 2 books are great though (as are the Stormlight books and Warbreaker).

I'm about 1/4 of the way through Bands of Mourning in Era 2 and I for sure like Era 1 better. I like Era 2 for sure, and I like that it is not as heavy as Stormlight. It's a nice break if you're reading them consecutively like I have been.
Honestly, as far as just enjoyment of reading, I like Era 1 as much as I do the three books of Stormlight. Though WoR being the best of them all.
I definitely wasn't new to fantasy but I think what would make me say Era 1 > Era 2 was the introduction to such a cool magic system, introduction to new creatures like Koloss, Kandra, Steel Inquisitors, etc. and also it had more weightiness to it. Era 2 is missing the overall gravity of the story that Era 1 had. I know that is the point of Era 2 so that is not a knock against it, just a personal preference. It's almost like Era 1 is a blend of Stormlight and Era 2.

Different strokes for different folks.
But Era 1 is a total chore to me now.

Considering where you are, I get this. It does improve though.

Era 2 is also the first "modern" fantasy I've ever read and that might be part of it too. Part of the appeal of fantasy to me is the no technology aspect of it. So reading fantasy with guns and cars is just different.

Yea it's not a knock on Era 2 at all. Alloy ended on a little bit of a let down, Shadows built it up like it was going to be more with Harmony being involved but ended up not being too crazy of an end. Still early on in Bands but liking it so far.
I have to be in the minority in this but oddly enough Steris is one of my favorite characters. Don't really know why but I just like her. Sure wouldn't want to be married to her but she's a good character.

You may want to check the Dresden files. It is really good modern fantasy.

If you like her now you will like her much more after Bands.
Era 2 increasingly ups the ante, I'll leave it at that.
