Never watched any of the movies. I’m about to read for the first time and I’m stoked to see what all the hype is about.

You are in for a treat! The Hobbit is my second favorite book of all time and obviously LOTR is amazing as well.

I’m jealous. I’ve read them so many times I’ve lost count. It’s like chasing that first high. I’d love to be able to read them again for the first time.

Lost almost all of my books in a flood several years ago. I mostly just read off of my kindle now, but I had to at least replace my Tolkien collection.

Don’t know how old you are.

The Hobbit is great and one of my favorite books of all time. But I think if I had read it the first time as an adult, I would not have enjoyed it as much (not sure that makes sense).

The Lord of the Rings is still incredible and for me is the standard by which all fantasy is judged. And 30 plus years after the first time I’ve read it, still haven’t found a book or series I like more.

The Hobbit book is 10X better than the movies. I read it to my kids all the time. The movies are incredibly drawn out and made more mature when the real tone of the book is a children's adventure.

I HATED Lotr on first readthrough. I was used to consuming books quickly and not accustomed to epic fantasy pace. Just accept the fact that the author will NOT get to the point quickly and just allow yourself to be immersed into the world he creates.

My second read of LOTR went much better. Just relax and enjoy a few weeks of life in Middle Earth.

If you like baseball, or fishing, reading LOTR has basically the same pace.

You tackled Wheel of Time or the Malazan series yet? If not....be prepared to take the above to the extreme

(WoT in a bad way, Malazan in a good way)

I love rereading the Hobbit. It's tone is fun and aimed at children. Once you open up LOTR, you realize the story has "grown up."

The books of Middle Earth are my absolute favorite.

I loved WoT... at first. I got to about halfway through book 9, got bored and angry then gave up completely. There's only so many braid tugging and folding arms under breasts that a guy can stand.

Had a buddy that was a huge WoT fan and he says that Sanderson salvaged the series. I never had the heart to pick the series back up to complete it.

Never read Malazan.

You should go back and read Sanderson's books. He did a great job (considering what he was given.)

There is no series in all of fantasy outside of Tolkien that can touch Malazan when it comes to world building. Main sequence is ten novels, most over 1k pages.

It's a very gritty and dark series though. Very similar to The Black Company if you've read that series.

I'll have to check out Malazan. First I've ever heard of it. I typically do a fantasy epic once every 2 or 3 years or so. It's not my preferred genre. I'm currently reading "The Stormlight Archive" by Sanderson.

I am reading The Frontiersman right now. Mainly Nonfiction. I do enjoy a good graphic novel. Not saying I won’t read LOTR. Fantasy has never peaked my interest.

Stormlight Archive are great books. I'm a big fan of Sanderson.

Malazan Book of the Fallen is much, MUCH darker though. Not something you'd want your kids reading either. One warning I will give you is that the first book, Gardens of the Moon, starts in media res. If you're not familiar with that term, you're dumped right in to the middle of the story and you will be confused about what's going on. Just push through it though. It's worth it. Big time.

The hype is real

If you're planning on watching the movies, LOTR does it justice, decently.

I refuse to watch The Hobbit. I watched the 1st and turned it off during the second. Im sorry those are an abomination and it sucks that thats what certain people are going to think the actual story is about.

Makes plenty sense. I read it for the first time when I was 35. Didn’t care for it at all.

I read both for the first time this past year, and I'm ready to read them again in 2018.
