I have always wanted to read Rice's original 30-page short story, from which she eventually adapted the published novel.

Does anyone know if it has ever been published or whether it is perhaps available somewhere online?

You could try writing her fan club.

Rice was a very good writer. I always thought the parts of her novels dealing with when the characters were mortal were better than the supernatural parts. I think she could have been a successful writer of straight literature.

She fleshes in characters as well as anyone I have read, I think.

The Witching Hour, (Vol. 1 of Mayfair Witch Chronicles), is by far her best. The Feast of All Saints is very good as well.
