Everything I have looked into points me to a textbook, which I will read but I’m not particularly desiring to pick up.

I’d like to learn about their achievements in technology as well as main players/emperors in the Empire. I’d even take some historical fiction if it would at least help with understanding the general ideals and thoughts that most people carried at the time.

History of Rome podcast.

Will take you from Romulus & Remus all the way to Justinian.

I am a big Roman history buff and if you want an all-encompassing, entertaining history, go with that podcast.

Roman Empire on Netflix is pretty good. I'm not joking. Historians are interviewed as well as on-screen acting.

If you don't mind reading multiple volumes, Gibbons' Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire covers pretty much everything.

Dan Carlin's podcast about Rome is exceptional (as is his podcast on Ghengis Khan) and very long and detailed. It used to be free but worth the modest fee if they charge. I also have Scipio Africanus: Greater Than Napoleon on my list about one of the most important men in human history.

Why? Better to start prior to First Punic War to really get an understanding of who they were as a people. Also, i really prefer Roman Republic to Roman Empire.
