I like reading books like Chernow’s on Hamilton, 600-800 pages but with an unbiased author

I’m pretty skeptical of Jefferson and think he may have been quite overrated so I’d like to read more about him

Google Sally Hemming's and you'll find the details of Thomas Jefferson's relationship with her & the many children they produced.

I read the Jefferson Bible recently. Maybe an interesting companion to a good biography.

Seconded. Very comprehensive and Meachem is a fantastic writer. Most of the time, you don't even feel like you're reading a biography.

He wrote another one in a similar style about Andrew Jackson. Very very good. Titled American Lion

Great book. Also worth reading American Sphinx by Joeseph Ellis, and Jefferson The Architect of American Liberty by John Boles.

Jefferson was a poetic statesman. He certainly was not overrated for that; he wrote some of the most beautiful and inspiring prose of the revolutionary period. However, he was not a man to put himself in harm's way. He was not a fighter, and in his day, some thought him a coward. His plans for an agrarian society, in which men lived pure lives close to nature, were immediately overwhelmed by Hamilton's vision of a financial, commercial empire.

So he was way wrong on the future of America; he was not a warrior; and he was a slaveowner, although he was against slavery. Against this, he was the poet of the revolution, wrote the Declaration of Independence, and consummated the Louisiana Purchase. A mixed bag, but on balance I say he was a great man.

I’ve actually read that one, loved it, just couldn’t remember Meachum’s names or I would’ve already searched for a book by hiM

I should have clarified that his writing is beyond reproach, I just wonder sometimes how much substance was actually there. I’m also dismayed by his inconsistencies regarding Presidential power. He preached one thing for years, then when he was POTUS behaved totally differently

So I suspect*. (Thus wanting to learn more)
