I wanted to ask you book experts on this board on some of your favorite books.

When I was a kid, I would read quite a bit up until high school, then I quit reading for whatever reason, now I wanna get back to reading some entertaining books.

I honestly don't care what kind of book it is either I just want to read something good. When I went to the bookstore the other day, I saw Into the Wild, The Martian, and The Revenant on the bookshelves and I thought of purchasing though, but I figured I would ask for some of your favorites.

Any suggestions on some good reads would be awesome. Thanks guys.

Two of my favorites are Lonesome Dove and Shogun.
Both are very long but so good.

Others:
IQ
Orphan X

Before you quit reading, what did you like reading? You might want to start your reading reentry with that genre or authors. You also didn't mention your present age.

A really good currentish book would be The Martian.

Never Let Me Go by Kazou Ishiguro

Great book that makes you think. Part dystopian sci-fi, part horror, part coming of age tale, I don’t want to say anymore because it is best to go in fresh.

Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize for Literature this past year.

Fiction or non-fiction?

Like both, but I slightly prefer non-fiction books, and I am 24 for the other person who asked. I always loved the old classic books I read in school though like 1984, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, etc., so I kind of wanted to try out some of the recent somes in the past 10 years or so that were good that I can try out. Outside of I guess romance novels, I am fine with any fiction and non-fiction books. Just kind of tired of reading just magazines, ya know?

And thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm appreciating the input.

Some of my favorite non-fiction books I have read over the past year or so:

Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman-- I think pretty much everyone should read this book. It will change the way you think about the way you think.

In True Blood by Truman Capote-- A true crime classic.

Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel-- Fascinating story of a man who lived in solitude in the woods of Maine for 27 years. He got supplies by breaking into unoccupied cabins terrifying and perplexing the whole community.

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight-- I'm not really into memoirs by famous people, but I heard this one was good and it was. A candid, funny, gripping look at the rise of Nike from its founding until it went public.

All the Pieces Matter by Jonathon Abrams-- An oral history of the best television show ever, The Wire. If you haven't seen The Wire, I wouldn't read this. I'd watch The Wire

When Breathe Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi-- Memoir by a young neurosurgeon diagnosed with terminal cancer. Obviously a sad read, but a great book on mortality and what makes life worth living.

Someone Could Get Hurt by Drew Magary-- A memoir of twenty-first century parenting by a former Deadspin writer. Very funny book.

Now I realize that if you look at the totality of my posts, so far on this board, you're going to see a lot of Longmire, by Craig Johnson. With this series, I am really getting back into reading in a thorough-going way, I had languished for years.

At the end of the seventh novel, Hell is Empty Johnson has a reading list, and it's solid. What's interesting about it is that the list is drawn from each of the main characters in the Longmire series up to that point. It includes a few parenthetical comments from the characters. It's actually quite interesting and quite a good list of lists and worth seeking out.
