How is it even remotely looking like that?

I had high hopes that this would turn into a classy operation similar to the outlander TV adaptation, but it is looking instead like another Xena–quality embarrassment that so many of other fantasy adaptations became. And how is a skinny a little dude cast as the hulking blacksmith Perrin?

Some of those were questionable, but otherwise that is kind of how the characters were written especially in terms of Rand and Mat. It wont ever be what you have in your head, but I'm hopeful it will be a worthy effort in the end.

I'd assume based on the "teen idol" look of a lot of the main characters head-shots. They do give off an MTV / Shannarah vibe, but as I said, that is largely how a lot of them are written.

I mean...the EF's are kids in their late teens early 20s, and all described as either insanely good looking or just good looking.

The casting is pretty spot on at least in that regard.

If they make Lan some young pretty boy it may be a problem.

Ya, the WoT world does not have any lack of attractive people.

I want to see who they cast as Thom, Lan, Rhuarc and some of the other Aiel.

Also Padan Fain as he will probably be the primary antagonist in the first season or so.

Some minor news.

They are looking for a stand in for a character, and are asking the stand in to be asian, about 6'1, etc. Sounds like Lan, asian makes sense for him.

They've also added another cinematographer, guy who was the DoP for a variety of shows, several episodes of Black Sails, an episode of Sherlock, the new His Dark Materials, etc.

Stand ins will take the place of an actor before the scenes start so they can check on lighting and so on. Once they have established that the lighting and so on are good to go the actors come in and do the scene.

They want someone with the same general height, build, and ethnicity. No actual acting talent, or even being the same age, matters.

Sounds like a great job.

Daniel Wu is 6'0 - I liked him in "into the badlands" but I always imagined Lan as bigger

Someone on another site mentioned David Lee McInnis who is an american asian actor but his roles have almost all been in Korean films, fairly big over there. He really really looks the part, probably really wants to break into american film.

Another mentioned Rick Yune.

A more clean cut version of Jason Momoa is like the exact image of Lan I always had in my head - obviously way too big of a name to be considered here.

Daniel Henney has been cast as Lan.

He’s an Asian American actor best known from Criminal Minds. Long filmography.

I like it.

They had a group picture up with the main cast yesterday, outside of Padan Fain, Basel Gill and the people at the eye of the world, not really too many more characters for book 1.

I guess elaine and logaine will need to be figured out for since both are seen in andor

Thom is a pretty glaring omission. He's there from the beginning. He doesn't have a whole lot to do in the first two books but is pretty essential in a lot of ways and increasingly becomes a major character.

Elayne, while only in one scene in book 1, from Book 2 on becomes a main character and major POV character of the series.

Min is obviously important as well.

A lot of people are pretty concerned that Thom and Min could be seeing the cutting room floor, or reworked into appearing later.

Oh I totally forgot about Thom, I don't think it would be terrible for him to be re-worked into appearing later, but his re-appearance would have to be done so he develops a bond with them so quickly without being the one one their side in the beginning and all.

I really hope they don't cut them, seems like an odd place to do that. I just want to see the direction they go, I am great about giving Moraine a big spotlight, love the idea of expanding insights into Logain's thoughts and roles, but hope some of the main characters don't get a bit lost in the shuffle.

Today is day 1 of filming according to multiple crew members. They are claiming an 180 day shoot, which would be almost 9 months of filming.

Carnival Row was an 108 day shoot for 8 episodes.

Group photo on day 1 above. Rand's hair is now red. I have high expectations. . .

Hopefully some more cast members leak out

Perrin looks absolutely terrible for the part from a size perspective. Hope their is some serious movie magic type stuff going on there or it's going to be lame.

I'm not too worried about the size or characters not fitting their description in that way, I'd alwasy envisioned Lan as some hulking monster, but I'm not sure if he was written that way or not. Perrin is one of my least favorite of the main characters so that may play a role, he may look weird swinging giant hammers and axes.

I get them trying to diversify the main cast in today's climate. I know the story has diversified cultures as a whole, but if you only see the main group for the most part in season 1, it could get panned for being just white people, etc. and not generate the following it needs to move forward.

I am concerned about some of the story lines and who they choose to highlight and all. The potential of cutting out Thom / Min is hopefully not true. Based on some of what I've read, I could see Min getting cut as they are uncomfortable with the whole "sharing" Rand thing - which admittedly is kind of a strange thing but is integral to three of the main characters and their motivations throughout.

I hope they don't cut her and you could easily counteract the "sharing" thing by showing two men sharing a woman or however they want to do it in the Aeil. Much rather see them edit / adjust it that way than the other way. Without a doubt though, the series will be altered a little bit in tone for 2019.

Hopefully it will be for the better, the characters were almost all portrayed as extremely, frustratingly stubborn, especially early on in the series. I know that is a "two rivers trait", but would be fine if it isn't highlighted as much in the show. After reading some comments I just hope it doesn't go too far in transforming it into a "women's fantasy series" as I've seen some quotes portray. They seemed to walk back on that so hopefully it turns out as a quality adaptation that stays true to the heart of the story.
