I think my next project is going to be a retelling of the inferno, but modernize it. Retool the sins that get you into hell, make new punishments, have the person meet more updated and relevant to this time people in hell.
Get rid of the Greek mythology and use actual demons as guardians and punishers.
Could be fun...

quote:you gonna keep the catholic orthodoxy, though? I've always thought that was what added an additional layer to it. In paradiso, I had never considered the concept of theotokos, and at the time, I became much more interested in the church's perception of Mary because of this book. can you mix in zombies?

I'm sure I could mix in zombies and I don't know about keeping it Catholic, but just making it Christian. I was thinking about a person journey through hell. I haven't decided on my guide.
I have already outlined Limbo, Lust, and Gluttony.
My vision of Limbo is extremely different than Dante's since there are many things I don't agree with him or the catholic church on. Lust has been broken down into three sections, Gluttony is different as well.
I need to finish a story I'm working on (starring the tiger fish) and then I'm jumping on this book.

A true indication of bad taste is rating Inferno highest.
Oh come the frick on. The only reason anyone would say this is to show off how smart he is. "Oh Dante's Inferno? Clearly a work for imbeciles. True scholars appreciate the Paradiso, where you read for 150 pages about how a bunch of lights are arranged around a rose."
The problem with the Paradiso is there's no narrative structure because there's no conflict. Everyone's already in heaven; they all agree, "Hey, this is great! I love God!" There's a line that I think is quite indicative-- Dante interviews two saints who, when alive, had some theological disagreement about the naure of angels. When they died and went to heaven, they found out who was right and who was wrong. But they didn't care, because no one ever disagrees with anyone else in heaven.

To cous cous:
I never said it was a work for "imbeciles," and I can understand why someone would be bored with the Paradiso particularly if they didn't really get what was going on philosophically.
The Comedy is actually alot less orthodox than most people assume (in one remarkable place, Dante saves a bunch of homosexuals). In fact, Dante's political treatise, the Monarchy, was burned after his death and was one of the first books put on the Index of Banned Books in the 16th century after Trent. If you read the works with some consciousness of Dante's daring, the later books get alot more exciting.

Not to mention he puts numerous Popes and Cardinals in hell. It was a book designed to make him enemies with a lot of powerful people

Anyone here read it recently? Thoughts? Everyone should read this incredible piece of literature.
Dantes Inferno and Plato's Republic should be read once a year by every high school and college student

It is very much a product of its time too. You need annotations for every other line. Great book. Purgatorio and Paradiso are very boring comparatively.

Read the books of Enoch, much of the hell stuff is gleaned from his writings

It's the only "fiction" book that I periodically reread.

We read it back in 84 Junior year of High School.
Great book.
Some parts of Hell Raiser the movie reminded me of Dante's Inferno. The different level of suffering.
