It's going to be interesting to see how the books live up to the show rather than how the show has been living up to the books. There are plenty of people who believe the show is better than the books, we will see after this season and hopefully getting to read Winds before the next.

Specifically when Oberyn and Tyrion meet and when he says he'll be his champion. So much better than the book.
Man oberyn and tyrion meeting for the first time was one of my favorite parts of book 4. The shows meeting was good, it just wasn't a long enough scene.
I love that I've read it twice now yet I still have to ask questions about one of my favorite parts of the book. But tyrion and oberyn actually meet out on the road not in the wore house right?

Right. Almost exactly as the show depicted, but Oberyn was actually on the road. I thought both were great, but enjoyed the book meeting more as well.

I like both. I rather the books, but I love being able to see the characters, especially when they nail them, like Oberyn.
I'd be shocked if we get to another season after this with out WoW having come out.

Hey my memory was right for once. I do love the in the episode though when Oberyn is talking to Cersei and keeps going "FORMER Queen regent." That was awesome. I though they casted him too. Just got on my nerves they made him out to be more homosexual than the books.

Wore? Really? God I hate my posts being quoted sometimes.
As far as movies vs books in general. First time this actually been talked about in this thread, little known fact. But I would imagine that if you're a Hordor and never plan on reading the books, that this is the greatest TV series of all time. If you're a Maester, it's just a really good series, getting a little worse as it goes on. Maybe.

The thing is, we have no idea if it's getting worse or better until the books come out. I fully expect to enjoy these next few seasons, but will be asking myself how it will play out in the book at the same time. I almost wish D&D didn't know the ending of the story. I would rather two seperate endings where the show goes left and the book right at a certain fork. You always ask yourself at the end of a series, "what would have happened if X had done this instead of that?" But in this case, they know the end game, so we will be reading what we have already seen on the show.
It's what you get when a writer goes from 3 books released in 4 years, to another 5 until the next book, then another 6 for the next. He's at 4 years since Dance now and it's being reported it won't release this year. 3 books in 4 years (from the release of GoT to the release of Storm) to 3 books in at best 11 years. (release of Feast in '05 to Winds hopefully in '16) I had hoped it wasn't the case, but the fat man has written himself in a corner and can't decide how to connect his current storyline to the ending he has in mind. He knows he's not going to finish and is probably hoping he gets to keep his fame and doesnt' have to.

I think you're right

It was hinted in the books that he was bi, it just wasn't as heavy-handed as the show. The show has the history of being in your face about things that are alluded to in the books.
We could look at the glass half full view and maybe he's finishing the series as we speak and will release the final two within a year of each other. I know, it's likely too optimistic.

It's GRRM. The man who broke a boy in chapter 8, killed the main character in the first book, killed the good guy in book 3 when you believed he was winning, killed the badass that was going to kill the evil badass... He might have finished 5 years ago and is just witholding the books to see us suffer. I put nothing past him at this point.

On his website, in 2013, Martin published an Arianne chapter wherein she heads for Griffin's Roost to see the young boy who is calling himself Aegon.[3] Victarion's chapter will take off "five minutes" after A Dance with Dragons, taking place on the eve of the Iron Islanders' surprise attack on the cities in Slaver's Bay.[4] Mago, who was killed in the first season of Game of Thrones television series, will be a recurring character in the sixth book.[5] A sample chapter on Martin's website is written from Theon Greyjoy's viewpoint and shows his interactions with Stannis Baratheon as they are camped in the snow on his march to Winterfell.[6][7] In March 2014, Martin published the chapter Mercy on his website, where Arya Stark continues her training with the Faceless Men
Any way I can get my hands on these chapters?

The ones that have been officially released you can link from his notablog blog, but there are also synopses from the public readings he does at the various cons available at Westeros.com. These aren't official and are often imperfectly transcribed in addition to being subject to revision by mi'Lard himself.

Arya and Jon fall in love: Arya and her "half-brother" Jon fall in love although they never act on their feelings. Their love comes to a halt when his true lineage – heavily speculated by book readers – is revealed. While on the run from his brother, Tyrion falls for Arya when he sides with the Starks

I'd have hated that. Of course I'd hope he'd have written the characters a little differently if that was the case.
I like to think the love between Jon and Arya are simply that of close siblings that genuinely miss each other.

For now though, the 1st season was definitely the best, season two next, then three, then 4. Mainly bc each season it seems to get further and further away from the book. Not a tremendous amount obviously, but still. In fairness to the show, the plot becomes increasingly harder to stick to as well.

Agreed, almost impossible not to.

Reading what I have already seen on TV would be the worst possible thing to me. Doing that with things like Silence of the Lambs or No Country for Old Men wasn't so bad bc I didn't invest as much time in reading them. it seems extremely unfair to the readers to allow that to happen. What I understood it to be was hbo said to Martin that if youre not done with Winds by the time we start working on season six, we are writing our own story. I guess that's not the case, but you would proba get your fork in the road ending

That's hard to say. I mean this is basically his life's work. It would be pretty crappy if he just gives up on this. He started in 1996 right? I'm almost done hating on him to hurry up and release Winds bc I'd rather him take his time, like he usually does, and get it right. I'm fine waiting, just make it good. Plus, he kind of dismissed what his editor said, so you never know.
*The one thing that bothers me the most is how supportive he is of the show. I'm like dude, they aren't even sticking to what you've done over the past 20 years. Hold some pride, have some dignity towards your work. I get it, you're rich and want more money, but is that worth more than keeping your written story being altered?
That's what I love about tolkien and his family. They were hardcore "hell no you ain't making a movie about this and screwing up our father's work". I mean his family backed his beliefs up when he was in the grave. I can't imagine how strongly he was against it. Finally a family member let's it happen and partially it worked but then the Hobbit happened and it completely screwed up that story. I would imagine Tolkien is rolling in his grave.
I wish GRRM had a little of that in him.

George R R Martin has announced via hisNot A Blog, that three of his previous separately published Dunk & Egg novellas, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight, will be released in one book,A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
“A hundred years before A Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros”
Martin had this to say about this book:
quote:
“Many of you, of course, will have read the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg in their original appearances in LEGENDS, LEGENDS II, and WARRIORS. But A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS will have a lot more than the three stories”
He then talks about the illustrator for the book:
quote:
“We wanted this to be an illustrated book, so we went to the amazing Gary Gianni and asked him to do some art for us, thinking perhaps we could include seven or eight interior illustrations. Gary turned us down. He loved the stories, he said, but he’d only do it if he could illustrate the entire book, with art on virtually every page.”
Gary Gianni has quite the resume, and Martin expounded on that:
quote:
“We said yes, of course, and Gary has been drawing for the better part of two years. Most fantasy fans know Gianni’s artwork from his work on PRINCE VALIANT, on the Wandering Star limited editions of SOLOMON KANE and BRAN MAK MORN, and of course for his stunning 2014 ICE & FIRE calendar, but we think A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS may be his best work to date.”
As a fan of the Dunk & Egg novellas, this compilation is an exciting prospect as there will be more added to the book, itself. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to be available on October 6, 2015.

Just checked the DVR and it recorded a Game of Thrones special "A Day in the Life". Pretty good so far.
