GoT is the only modern fantasy I've read. It's really all I have time for. But I've read The Chroni..icles of Narnia and LotR, I recommend those for sure.
ETA: apologies.. ASOIAF and all of the novellas are the only modern fantasy I've read.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch would be my first suggestion.
Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy and three stand alone books in the same world
Brent Weeks Night Angel Trilogy
Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire Trilogy
Steven Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen series
All of the above are fantasy of the more gritty/dark/realistic style GRRM fits into.

i googled, "if i like game of thrones what should i read"
and these two keep coming up
Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy
The Darkness That Comes Before by Scott Bakker

there was a thread on here earlier about the Misborn trilogy, bunch of posters endorsed it, I was going to pick it up on Amazon soon.

I would suggest all those in my list plus Brandon Sanderson (I would start with Warbreaker before Mistborn myself) who the guy above me just mentioned before Scott Bakker. Though Sanderson is more traditional modern fantasy than GRRM style fantasy.
Bakker is okay, but his series is very uneven and definitely not something I would suggest to someone looking for something similar to Martin (and particularly not to someone who doesn't read alot, Bakker has philosophy and wordiness out the yin yang). His series is more of a twisted version of Lord of the Rings mixed with the Crusades era Middle East, not really similar to Martin in tone at all. But it is dark and gritty.

Absolutely fantastic series. Darker, high fantasy with minimal "world building". More of a learn as you go approach to world building. Huge cast of characters.

Malazan is one of my favorite finished series. It's very much a show and not tell sort of series, so you may possibly be lost at first, but it's an awesome series if you stick with it (and it's to your taste). As opposed to the rest of the books on the list I gave you it's more of a love/hate series. I've seen quite a number people online that hated it, but those who like the series love it. I'd put it on par with ASOIAF, but it is much more high magic, with big battles with magic being thrown around.
But if you are looking for bad arse characters like the Red Viper and the Hound, Malazan is filled with them. And Malazan has the best world building of any series I've ever read.
