Too late now, I guess, and I'm not Roman Catholic, but GK Chesterton's Orthodoxy is a classic and will certainly lend itself to contemplation in a retreat setting-maybe for next time

I won’t troll you by recommending John Owen or even JI Packer (Knowing God is great)
I don’t yet know enough about her theology, but I really like Liz Oldfield’s perspectives and tone.
Just started her book Fully Alive.
I love her framing of sin as relational. It's really made me think.
Do you listen to Paul VanderKlay? He's hosted her.

If you’re looking for a good Catholic book - try “The Warning”

How about Summa Theologica?
Aquinas did compare it to straw after his "experience". But perhaps his writing played some type of causal role in having the experience?
I've wondered about that, and if his humbleness also was the primary reason for the straw comparison.

Late to your question, however I recommend Wurmbrand-Tortured for Christ.
It’s about Richard Wurmbrand, a Protestant minister whom was tortured in a series of Communist Romanian prison and reeducation camps.

I find Tim Keller books pretty insightful.
