He’s gave up the orthodox view of revelation (epistemology, not the book) aka, doesn’t matter if the resurrection happened historically, it can happen in your heart.

Also he was a dirtbag

Other than Schaeffer, I’d also recommend Herman Bavinck’s “Christian Worldview” or the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd

Yeah, I knew about the mistress.
I didn’t know he was like Tillich and Bultmann regarding the Resurrection.

I like his emphasis on Jesus as The Word of God, his view of election, and his hopeful universalism.

I’ll keep reading.

Schaeffer didn’t believe it either until he visited Barth near the end of Barth’s life and got confirmation.

I’m in Baldwin County, AL. If you ever go to the beach in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, hit me up. We can exchange SBC war stories. The beer is on me. Or breakfast in one of my Waffle House units.

I have found some grounding and renewed vigor in the Book of Common Prayer and adjacent liturgies and prayers. I enjoy the simplicity of the Bible readings and the accompanying simple, short sermons and bible studies that go with them.

I think I am in the acceptance phase of doubt and disillusionment.
The point is:
1. Large, wealthy churches may just not be the place for the most genuine expressions of the faith. Who knew?!

2. Common Evangelical practice, or lack thereof, causes doubt.
Everything is in your head or in your heart.
Thoughts and emotions are all there are. It is not easily sustainable for the thinking person.

I've found Richard Beck's seven part blog helpful as well as McLaren's Faith after Doubt.
Here's the blog: On Intentionality: Part 1, Disengaging the Autopilot

If you have similar thoughts or experiences, I'd love to hear.

Echo Francis Schaeffer for what OP is looking for

Love the L’Abri ideas library! Is any of your content on there?

No, none of my work. I never worked/lived at the English L’Abri, just an adjacent organization in England, and knew the workers like family. Stayed there many times and attended the film festivals.

Very cool. Spent some time in Europe, always had the dream of buying a brewery and calling it L'Abrew. Used the ideas library as references often; excellent resource not enough people are aware of.

Haha that’s great. Texted this to my former boss and former chairman of L’Abri International. I’ll let you know his response.

Please do!

I've got the perfect city to start it in, and perfect person to start it with, too!

It's a local missionary who I've worked with. Deeply gifted in languages, very intelligent, incredibly well read. Speaks the native language fluently, does translating and teaching.

Mere Christianity by CS Lewis is a fantastic book

It is. I’ve read it twice. I recently finished The Abolition of Man by CS Lewis. It will address the existentialism you are seeking. It’s very short, but that’s made up for in complexity.

I've read that one twice. It made me quit teaching
