I like the genre with a good fictional story but packed with real world history. Dan browns books are kinda meh, but I've always enjoyed the history in them.
And recommendations on books in this genre?

I'll throw out Steve Barry's cotton Malone series. I don't know how similar it is in style to dan brown but premisises are in the same category. The first one is titled the templars legacy if that tells you anything. May be closer to national treasure than dan brown.
Also, there's William dietrichs Ethan gage series. Set in the early 19th century Gage is an adventurer that gets entangled with the likes of napoleon etc, solves mysteries, stops bad guys.
Those may not actually be anything like what you are looking for.

I came here to say Steve Berry. Probably what you're looking for. Although I think I enjoy Dan Brown a little more.

Foucault's Pendulum and The Name of the Rose, both by Umberto Eco. Eco is who Dan Brown wants to be when he grows up.

Yep. Umberto Eco is Dan Brown on steroids. Foucault's Pendulum is the DaVinci Code for advanced learners. Warning: very dense, but worth it.

The Last Templar
It's the only one I've read by Raymond Khoury - so I can't speak to any of his other work.

Agreed, not an easy read but an excellent one. The Name of the Rose is easier and very good as well. Interestingly - Neal Stephenson's Anathem has a strong Name of the Rose vibe to it. To be honest, though, I'm not sure I'd recommend any of those to someone looking for a book similar to Dan Brown.

If OP's interest in Dan Brown is primarily because he enjoys the semiotic, "hidden history" aspects of the stories, then Eco is the logical endgame. If, on the other hand, he just likes good fiction in a historical setting, then Ken Follet's stuff might be more up his alley.

I have Fall of Giants on the shelf...been there for a while. Can't seem to bring myself to crack it open for whatever reason (maybe because I know is there is two just as daunting right behind it.) Maybe I should just put that one next in line.

Follet is a beast. His books are usually pretty long but I've always moved through them quickly. He's an excellent writer and does a very good job of making you feel like you are in the time period the book takes place in.
