Read it 8 years ago for the first time and didn't finish it. Came back to it while I was in graduate school and fell in love with it and have re-read it several times since.

I wasn't a huge fan of The Goldfinch by Tartt, but I love the Secret History. Anyone else checked it out?

I liked both of those books. I always pictured Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Bunny for some reason. Definitely not a fan of her other book The Little Friend though.

Yes. Read it over 30 years ago and it still resonates. I was in college at the time albeit a break. I read it over the December holidays. Always wanted it to be a movie but I’m sure I’d be disappointed.

I think it would KILL as a mini series like Queen’s Gambit. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t been adapted but The Goldfinch has

What a great book.
Tana French’s The Likeness reminded me of it a bit.

The Secret History

So. True Story.

In 1995 I got the chance to have dinner with Tom Wolfe. I basically just listened to him tell stories most of the evening. But when I got a chance to ask him one question, this is what I came up with: "Why has no one written the Great American College Novel?"

And he smiled and said: "Well, that's a good question. But I would say that it's probably because by the time we really learn how to write, we are so far gone from college that we forget what it feels like, smells like, etc."

"But now that you mention it, I just finished a novel called The Secret History that I think has a chance to be the Great American College Novel. It needs time to resonate and to mature. But I think it will be thought of as great."

Then later he said something along the lines of: "I actually took a stab at it. I have a draft of a college novel. But after reading The Secret History I think maybe mine doesn't rise to that level. So I'm not sure what I will do with it."

That novel became I Am Charlotte Simmons. Which was awful.

Anyhow. CSB.

I loved The Secret History. Could not stand The Goldfinch.
