Check out some of McMurtry's other books: The Last Picture Show; Horseman, Pass By (which he wrote shortly after leaving college; it was filmed as one of my favorite movies, Hud); Leaving Cheyenne (filmed as Lovin' Molly)

I got hungry every time Gus talked biscuits.

Great book. As is Texasville. The other 2 books in the series aren't that great though. Also read All My Friends are Gonna Be Strangers. Quite possibly my favorite McMurtry book, and that's saying something. The man can spin a yarn.

Yes. Agree.
And my experience was surreal. I started the audiobook in San Antonio, on a drive (all hat, no cattle) that began on Kiawah Island, went through BR, and ended in Montana.
It was awesome listening to the scenery as I drove through it (in slightly modernized form).
I was genuinely sad when it ended. I was up there by myself rebuilding my deck, and I felt as Lonesome as some of the characters (no spoilers).

This is a top 5 for me, as well. One of the few novels that I’ve read more than twice.
I cannot recommend it any higher! Man I might have to go at it again. It’s been awhile.

Read all of the book series. Loved it.
That Buffalo Hump was quite the worthy adversary.

I enjoyed it and really liked the sequel and the two prequels. I may have liked Streets of Laredo as much or more than Lonesome Dove.

Great book. Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon are both pretty good as background filler only if you've already read LD. I never read Streets of Laredo. Don't see the point without Gus.

You should read it if you enjoyed Lonesome Dove. It is still top notch even without Gus.
