The Texans Reached Out To Deshaun Watson On David Culley Hiring...But Did They?
© Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
It's been a weird morning if you're a Houston Texans fan. You get a new head coach. Then your star QB asks to be traded. According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans reached out to Deshaun Watson to inform him of the hire...
quote:

“The next big task for Culley in his first head-coaching job: connecting with Watson as soon as possible to attempt to build a relationship and initiate a potential reconciliation with the fourth-year quarterback,” Wilson writes. “Watson is upset with Texans chairman and chief operating officer Cal McNair for a lack of input into the hiring process after being assured that he would have input and has lost confidence in the direction of the franchise, which skidded to 4-12 last season despite him leading the NFL in passing yards.”
Sounds like "informing" him and making him a part of the process are two different things, which makes me think they hired who they saw fit and just let Watson know. Now...he gone...

Employee. Want to make the decisions, be a GM or buy the team. They are terribly run, but employees are employees.

I can understand if a QB wants to have input on his new coach, but in all honesty, frick deshawn watson. You don't own the team dude. You're a player. Coaching hires aren't about skin color. It's about finding the best man for the job. Trade his arse and move on.

Love how triggered some of you are about an athlete taking his career into his own hands.

This isn't about an athlete "taking his career in his own hands". You do that with what you can control. And this dude ain't tom brady or payton manning or even cam newton. This is a 4th year player trying to dictate coaching hires. If the Texans go and hire who deshawn watson wants, somebody he bar-b-ques with or whatever, if it explodes, deshawn watson just forces a trade at that point and moves on. The Texans have a responsibility outside of one player. Ya feel me?

If you have leverage in your career, then use it. However, it won’t make others not think you are a douche for doing it. Felt that way about Elway, Eli, and now Deshaun.

He's paid to be quarterback. He's not upper management. What profession would an employee go tell the CEO who to pick as regional manager. Do your job!

The Texans told Watson he'd be consulted in the gm and coach hiring process. He didn't ask to be consulted. They told him he would, and then they didn't. And comparing any other profession to professional sports is a stupid comparison that has nothing to do with reality.

The sports profession. You act like this is not commonplace with star athletes.

What qualifies him to be a part of the process? He has never been a GM or a coach in the NFL, so why would they let him be part of the process? They told they would consider his "list" of coaches he would like... and they did. The real problem is you've got HeHaw running the team and his right hand man is the team preacher, who nobody likes.

The fact that they promised him he would be. It's like they've gone out of their way to create a disgruntled player. He didn't make a list. He was approached and told he'd be consulted, and then he wasn't. Piss poor management.

Watson thinks he's Tom Brady over here... nothing worse than a dramatic athlete. No wonder pro-sports are losing ratings.

Dude wants to win and the Texans have no clue how to do that and have no interest in listening to him. Only a complete loser would just sit there and throw passes in futility in that situation.

I think they suck because they've sucked for a long time and Watson wants out. So he's using this to throw his tantrum.

"Sounds like "informing" him and making him a part of the process are two different things, which makes me think they hired who they saw fit and just let Watson know. " That's how it generally is in most jobs, is it not?

Not when they had agreed to allow their star quarterback to have input in the hire.
