Go look at any other country and people were wearing masks when they were sick or around sick people well before covid. None of it is madatory, but some people don't want to get sick.

The mask doesn't prevent you from getting sick. Especially a surgical one. If he was wearing it for some other purpose, fine, but you shouldn't be irrationally confident when posting about the efficacy of a mask to protect you from illness.
