It isn't a stupid drill because of the risk of injury; it is a stupid drill because it doesn't teach you anything. It is a scenario that is rarely, if ever, going to happen in a game. When are you going to have a free running ball carrier, ten yards from the endzone with no blockers, and three defenders at the back of the end zone waiting to run to him? Put blockers in there and challenge both sides to get and stop a touchdown.

It's tackle football. There is no way to avoid injury. Go full speed in practice, get injured then. Or, get injured going full speed in a game without having gone full speed in practice. When someone chooses to play tackle football, that's the risk he accepts.

It’s FCS. You can’t afford injuries because of the drop off in talent and experience from your 1’s and everyone else. And yeah there are proven ways to mitigate injuries. Stretching for example. And yes, you accept the risk to get injured, doesn’t mean you are obligated to do stupid shite that raises your chances of sustaining a major injury that sticks with you far after your playing days since they will most likely end after college.
