Head coach Ed Orgeron announced Thursday night that LSU center Lloyd Cushenberry and outside linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson have been given the No. 18 jersey for the 2019 season. Per LSUSports.net:
quote:

Cushenberry, a junior from Dutchtown High School in Carville, becomes the first offensive lineman to wear No. 18. Chaisson is a redshirt sophomore from North Shore High School in Houston.

Both players were presented their new number at a team meeting that wrapped up LSU’s first day of training camp.

As an offensive lineman, the rules of college football prevent Cushenberry from actually wearing the No. 18 jersey so instead, his No. 79 jersey will be accompanied by a No. 18 patch. Chaisson, who wore No. 4 a year ago, will wear No. 18 on the field.

The only offensive player that should have gotten it is Joe Burrow, double period.. No offense to Cush but this was a perfect year for a QB like Joe to get it, he earned it.

Would love to know know the exact rule about linemen wearing certain numbers. Thought that was only an NFL rule and that college has relaxed the position based numbers.

I know we have high hopes for Cush. How about giving him Faneca's or Mawae's number?

18 patch? This is getting ridiculous. Give it to burrow. Chassion must be doing great at camp and must be a leader because winning that after not playing the previous year seems odd. Maybe no one wants it

Thought Divinity would have 18. If Chaissons putting in that kind of work, though... Look out!

Didn’t see that coming with Chaisson. The 18 has been typically reserved for seniors. I would have thought Lawrence or Divinity on defense.

I really like the #18 patch. If were doing this tradition, I like that method a lot.
