Report: LSU To Request Permission To Interview Saints DL Coach Ryan Nielsen For DC Job
by TD Staff ReporterJanuary 18, 2021

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielson has been rumored to be a candidate for the LSU defensive coordinator job over the last few weeks and now FootballScoop.com is reporting that the Tigers will request permission to interview him.
Ed Orgeron is very familiar with Neilson as he was Ryan's defensive line coach at USC from 1998-2001. Coach O also hired Neilson to be his defensive line coach at Ole Miss from 2005–2007.
Nielsen has spent the past four years working under Sean Payton in New Orleans. Prior to the Saints, he was run game coordinator, defensive line coach, and recruiting coordinator at NC State from 2013-2016.

Now that NFL influence could extend to the other side of the ball. Sources tell FootballScoop LSU plans to request permission to interview New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen to be the Tigers’ next defensive coordinator. Nielsen is under contract, and so there’s always a chance the club could deny him permission to interview.
Nielsen has spent the past four years with the Saints, turning the club’s D-line into one of the best in the NFL, and prior to that spent four years as the run game coordinator, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at NC State. His final year in Raleigh saw the Wolfpack rank eighth in the country in rushing defense while defensive end Bradley Chubb earned All-ACC marks.

That wouldn’t go well for the Saints. Any other team but the State school of Louisiana..maybe.

Yeah, because no team or coach ever has/had a bad game. I swear, LSU fans want nothing but a saban staff. Pussies.

There’s a difference between having a call to gauge interest and conducting a formal interview. I’m sure at least interest was gauged but Nielsen wanted to focus on the playoff run (rightfully so)

I assumed it because we're very late in the process now. I figured he was locked in as long as nobody else had been announced. If he turns us down, wtf is O going to do then? I guess I'm just dumb.
