Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
Ross Dellenger with The Advocate is reporting that LSU officials and offensive coordinator Matt Canada are in the final stages of settlement negotiations to cut-ties with each other after just one season.
quote:

The nature of the separation and its legal standing are being reviewed by university leaders, and a final outcome is expected by the end of the weekend. Officials on both sides – the university and Canada’s agent, Pete Roussel – are in deliberations regarding the hefty buyout tied to Canada’s contract.

The highest paid offensive coordinator in college football last year, Canada signed a three-year deal in December of 2016 paying him $1.5 million in salary. The school owes him about $3.3 million to buy out the final two years of the deal. The program can pay the $3.3 million in monthly installments over the life of the contract, through 2020. The amount is mitigated with any future salary Canada receives from another job.

Until LSU issues an official statement, nothing is final. However, I have no animosity towards this man. It didn’t work out. No big deal. Not everyone gets along in the workplace. It happens. With the talent we will have any decent coordinator should have a great offense! I really don’t see this as a problem. If, in fact, it is true.

I have no ill will towards Canada. It didn't work for whatever reason. I personally believe he was handcuffed. On the flip side, if I'm Alleva, I tell O, you better make it work. You hand picked him and we paid him top dollar. Figure it out.

CEO picked him and LSU paid Canada top dollar. CEO should take some of his own salary to pay off what is owed to Canada. One Team, One Heartbeat, One Wallet! GEAUX TIGERS!!!

Talent? like how we’re losing starting QB, only 2 RB’s w/ significant playing time, top 2 WR’s, top H-back, and potentially 1-2 on the o-line?

Go get Kendall Briles, NOW!!!

I'm seeing more and more that these coordinators are signing these contracts with the buyout being their top priority. Take the job, earn the one year salary, get bought out and collect a check moving on to the gig you really wanted. Make him an offer Ags

LSU needs to put a Neymar-esque buyout on coordinators so if any school comes calling they have to pay through the nose.
user avatar
SoulGlo76 months
So he wanted to leave but we have to buy him out? If he wants to stay, frick Alleva for all this mess.
user avatar

He didn't want to leave. He is being let go. Aleva didnt cause anything.

Doesn't sound to me like Canada has any choice in the matter...

He's obviously going to coach again, perhaps this season. Why not just let him find another gig and offset the monthly. Unless he already has another job and that's why they're negotiating a buyout.

Based on the original post, it looks like that is what they are doing: "The amount is mitigated with any future salary Canada receives from another job."

Bad move, no coaches should be let go after 1 yr.

I definitely agree!

@Lexman1 Why is it so difficult for you to admit O botched this one? When you get to hand pick your guy with money not being a factor, and then he’s gone after one season, that reflects very poorly on you. I’m sure Canada is a total malcontent, but that should be something you find out in the vetting process about a guy who has been at 5 schools in 7 years

We should pay Canada out of O’s salary

And let Aranda take over. It’s such an easy fix.

"The amount is mitigated with any future salary Canada receives from another job." So in theory, some team could pick him up for minimum wage and LSU would still owe him over $3.2 million?

I have no ill will towards LSU moving on. There are better OC options out there and the offense saw improvements which I attribute more to the improvement of Danny Etling than anything else. My concern is how this effects the players from a learning standpoint. Continually having to learn new playbooks is detrimental to the development of our offensive scheme...Praying for a great OC hire that we can keep a few years.
user avatar
Lexman176 months
You make a good point. And to that end, wouldn’t it make sense to promote someone such as Ensminger or Raymond who already know Canada’s offense? Thereby eliminating the need to learn a new system. Not to mention save a boat load of money to get ready to give Aranda another extension next year when someone else comes calling. Just saying.
user avatar
BigTimer2376 months
Are you honestly making a justification for promoting within for the guy whose whole head coach pitch was based around hiring the best coordinators in the country on both sides of the ball?

do those negotiations sound like "pay me the 3 million you owe me?". That's what I would say.

Alumni95, if you question the talent on offense, you haven’t been paying attention to our recruiting class this year. #1WR in the nation, WR transfer from Texas Tech, TE/H-Back from Fla., RB Curry&Provens, Top 2 Juco OL(Including #1 Traore),plus 3 Top OL recruits, returning experienced OL starters, and QB’s Brennan & Narcisse! And we still have 4 spots left on NSD! I don’t know what kind of talent you’re looking for, maybe NFL, I guess!

I’ve seen it all, and to date everything you’ve listed is still UNPROVEN talent in the SEC.

I hope that if we're doing this for O and buying out Canada that there was at least a catch. Maybe reduce O's buyout to nothing after this season. But we talking about Alleva, so, O probably gets an extension after all of this.
user avatar
TigerFan5555576 months
this is actually what im hoping for as well, some of this money should be coming from O's contract or his buyout, this was his foul up..
user avatar
Vood76 months
How is there any negotiation? If they want to fire him, they should pay him. If I were Canada, I would say pay me what the contract states or I am going to work on offense.
user avatar
Lexman176 months
Sounds to me like Canada wants out, if this is true. Still haven’t heard anything official.
user avatar
TigerFan5555576 months
i agree, id say kiss my arse, give me my money.. he was hired to run the offense with no meddling, orgeron meddled. this is his foul up... hell id make orgeron pay half the buyout from his own salary.. oregeron better realize its not his team.. hes just the figure head..
user avatar
toothfxr9276 months
Yep...Ensminger will be the new OC...Ogeron wants to run a pro style offense with power running and play action passing..Les would be proud of new (Wink Wink)offense

its definately about his pride, always has been..

After reading the 2012 story from Wisconsin, it sounds like everywhere he's been Canada has wanted to be the head coach instead of "just" OC. He should look for a lower tier HC job and see how that goes.

Not a fan. Finished below where a lot of Cam Cameron offenses finished!!! That's not the company you want to be in!!!

This is financially a very poor decision! Canada clearly had success offensively in his first year. LSU offensive production against Alabama, was better than last years. And was better than Alabama's offense. So they are paying Cam Cameron, Les Miles, Stands just received another big contract! Oberon, and now Canada. And I believe I am missing another coach. But this is a financial Mess!!!

Sure it is. But it’s LSU football! A multi billion dollar business. This is a drop in the bucket for these guys. Not saying I agree or disagree, but Taf can afford it!
