During his Monday press conference, Brian Kelly discussed LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker and the tremendous job he had done building relationships with his players.

Former LSU defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, who played two seasons under former defensive coordinator Matt House, seemed to agree with Kelly's words and responded with what was likely a subtle shot at House.

Wingo was Second-Team All-SEC for the Tigers in 2022 but missed five games during his junior season in 2023 due to injuries.

He declared for the NFL Draft following LSU's bowl victory over Wisconsin and was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 6th round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He has appeared in six games for the Lions this season.

A solid defensive coordinator is the most important role on a football team. The problem is, you usually only get 2-3 years max with them at their peak. Hope Kelly can help these guys understand the grass isn't always greener. Look at Aranda. Look at Venebles. Look at Charlie Strong. Sometimes being a great DC is good enough.

I sure thought Aranda was gonna be a good HC. This may be his last year.

Matt house tried to instill a pure-business culture like what the NFL has, that doesn’t work whenever you have kids that are 18 years old

He would have increased his stock had he stayed on.

I hope somehow we can hang on to Baker for at least 2 more seasons. Pay him whatever it takes.

So how are high school coaches these days? They must be soft as a roll of Charmin sitting on 2 foam pillows...huh?

I don’t understand. Is he saying the culture was bad when House was here?

He is saying House did not hold his hand or blow kisses in his ear while coaching.

Would ypu rather have a guy who knows how to talk his players and have a rapidly improving defense or the one who doesn't blow kisses and it's the worst in school history?

Last year, it was obvious many players were playing not to make mistakes. That encourages overplaying
and abandoning assignment to make plays, which leads to players being out of position. It takes time to purge that culture out. Against Arkansas and Ole Miss, you could see the defense finally exhaling and having fun. Same players with slightly less talent than last year. But, and entirely different result. Hope it continues.

Great coaches make players feel like they are in the trenches with the players and everyone in the trench has to be accountable. They get production. Two coaches with the same message will not be accepted the same. The coach that show competence, consistency, respect and tough love will succeed. The one who disrespect and minimize players individuality won’t. Great jobs with a horrible culture is a horrible job with good people stuck in it.
