LSU athletic director Joe Alleva spoke with the media on Tuesday and said that McNeese State cancellation from last weekend could cost the school somewhere between $1.2 and $3.2 million. Per The Advocate:

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said refunding tickets and game expenses will cost the athletic department at least $1.2 million and as much as $3.2 million. LSU’s costs include paying McNeese State its $500,000 guarantee for the game, as well as costs for personnel such as police, ushers and ticket takers.

Alleva said the school has an insurance policy for such issues, but he isn’t sure how much will be covered because a brief part of the game actually was played.
Alleva also provided fans with ticket refund details on Tuesday.

Its not a big deal. They were selling ponchos for over $8. if it doesn't rain, you get $0 from that. Plus the season ticket holders are paying way more than face value per ticket. In some cases over $200 more than buying them on the street.

I don't get the whole paying security and staff, you would pay that anyway. They should budget knowing its possible games could get moved or canceled.

well I guess it depends on how many fans actually ask for refunds. I wouldn't ask, but that's just me. Nor does it bother me if ticketholders do ask.

Well at least it wasn't played on a dangerous field. Remember the bowl game a few years ago versus Penn State. This cancellation sends LSU into the Miss St. game with fewer reps BUT less injuries. I think that in itself is in LSU's favor. It is still a long season and one less game will not be counter-productive.

A game & not worth the risk of playing in a dangerous environment.

$1.2-$3.2 is too broad of a range. Ticket refunds should be easy to calculate with the loss of concession sales being vague at this point (assuming it takes a bit of time for those sales to be collected).

Also, revenue is only half of the equation. I care a lot more about profits that were lost.

I'd be interested to know what percentage that is of the overall Athletic Dept budget?

For a state in bad financial shape this is bad news.
