LSU starting linebacker Greg Penn is switching his jersey number from 30 to 3 for the upcoming season to honor former defensive back Greg Brooks. Per The Advocate:
quote:

"I think he's fitting for (wearing Brook's number) because of the relationship he had with him," LSU coach Brian Kelly said. "... Greg has been a great leader for us, and you know, we expect him to have a great season."

Penn had worn No. 30 for the Tigers in each of his first three years with the program. The senior had a career-high 89 tackles and four sacks last season, his second as a full-time starter.

He received permission from Brooks' family before changing his number.

"They just said 'If anybody should wear it, it should be you,' " Penn said. "So I kind of felt honored by that."

Brooks was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer, shortly after undergoing emergency brain surgery to remove a tumor.

I really liked Greg Penn before this. The dude just keeps coming through as a stand up guy.

Nice gesture for a teammate. I hope Brooks can make it to a game this year. Tiger Stadium would absolutely explode if he was a surprise, honorary captain before a big game like Ole Miss.
