Talented LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette witnessed crime and devastation at a young age while growing up in the 7th Ward in New Orleans.

Fournette, a consensus All-American, took to Twitter on Tuesday and said that Football has saved his life and helped him escape some of the issues he saw as a youth.

In case you missed it, ESPN's College Gameday aired a segment about Fournette earlier this season, titled "Fournette Driven By New Orleans Roots," which was fantastic.

Must drug dealers become products of their environments and usually are influenced in that lifestyle. Sometimes even parents can't prevent that especially growing up in the 7th ward. Seen it many times.

I honestly don't see him being able to go down that path, with the parents he has.... i mean, it makes a good story and all, but i don't think his family would have allowed that, football or not....

He'd be a chill drug dealer, and I would not mind having a drug dealer with this young man's character.

As a retired police officer I have seen so many young men waste their talents both athletically and academicly, by going into the streets and following the crowd.

I always told them easy now, harder later. If they work work hard now then later becomes easier.

"He could have also been a neurosurgeon or astrophysicists. Thank goodness for football!"

Yes, because this is such a prevalent job for poor black folks in south LA, unlike drug dealing. Some of you have lived in your suburban white picket fence home for too long.

He would have been a very successful drug dealer or killer if he went that direction.
