LSU coach Brian Kelly held his weekly press conference on Monday to recap the Mississippi State win and look ahead to Saturday's game vs. New Mexico. Here's what he had to say:

--Brian Kelly opens his Monday press conference with praise for BJ Ojulari and Jay Ward who earned SEC weekly honors.

-Brian Kelly on building on the Mississippi State win: We have to look to persistency and consistency. After a good win, you have to follow up with a complete performance. Our expectations and standards are that we have a great week of preparation.

-Brian Kelly on New Mexico: Their defense poses some challenges, only allowing 13.5 ppg and forced seven turnovers last week. "If you're not executing at a high level they will turn it into a close game."

-Brian Kelly on OL Anthony Bradford: He will be activated this week. He's competing for playing time at guard.

-Brian Kelly on the OL penalties: A bunch were unforced and were due to communication. Says there may be overcoaching it. They are trying to find that sweet spot with the o-line.

-Brian Kelly on freshman OT Emery Jones: "He exceeded expectations. He's not going to be perfect, but he's active. He's got great feet. And he is a great open-field tackler."

-Brian Kelly on LSU's special teams: The coaching has to be better, and he has to be more involved.

-Brian Kelly on the run game: Our backs are what we expected. Everyone is going to contribute. Pleased with the ability to run the ball to close out games. He was happy with John Emery Jr.'s pass protection.

-Brian Kelly on freshman LB Harold Perkins: He adds something to our pass rush. I think we've found a niche for him in terms of where he can help us. He can get work in dime and nickel packages.

-Brian Kelly on Malik Nabers: "He has had some adversity, moved on from it, and is better because of it. That's a great quality to have. He's been really good. He's really grown."

-Brian Kelly on Jay Ward: He's is a "little banged up" but expects him to be available this weekend.

-Brian Kelly on Jayden Daniels' run/pass balance: There are times he needs to take advantage of an opening and make a throw, but we also don't want him to overthink it and not use his dynamic running abilities.

-Brian Kelly on John Emery Jr.: He was "elated" after the game. He was sore, tired, and felt good to be back. He was nervous but ran with good vision. Knocked some rust off, it was a good first game back.

Special teams got really lucky with the punt error of the Miss St. returners blunder. I agree with Coach Kelly in expecting better play from the total Special team group. I saw some improvement in our last game on special teams… no blocked extra punts or field goals. We need more yardage gains on punt returns and kickoff returns.

Not trying to bash any previous coaches, but dang it's kinda crazy to see a clear concise answer. "He's not perfect, but he's active". Refreshing to not get smoke blown up your arse.

I'll agree. It's wild to understand everything our head coach is saying and the point he is making.

I pick up a whole lot of the elder Saban years in his comments. What ND fans construed as throwing players under the bud was merely accountability. How many times do you hear Saban say we can coach it but the player has to perform. Just saying, BK gives a lot of the same vibe with a touch more eloquent delivery.

I understand what you're saying but, ya know, some of it might have been play acting or playing dumb to not give anything away to our opponents. You have to take that into consideration, I think.

I love Les and O and don't think either has a Master's in English but that doesn't make them bad coaches.
