LSU head coach Ed Orgeron was asked Monday about wide receiver Jonathan Giles and the reason for his jersey number change from No. 7 to No. 12. Here's what he had to say:
quote:

ED ORGERON: I went to him, asked him if it was too much pressure. He said no. I said, well how about you change it up. What's your favorite number? I said I got these numbers available. He said, coach, I'll wear 12. I was thinking it took the pressure off him.
Giles, who was Texas Tech's leading wide receiver in 2016 with 69 receptions for 1158 yards and 13 touchdowns, has only caught seven passes for 32 yards this season.

I am so hurt and disappointed to hear so much negativity surrounding my son Jonathan. When we came to LSU we came with so much excitement that Jon will make an impact for team, in which he did to earned the #7,Jon worked hard the year he had to set out and to earned the starting position for his hard work but to hear some of the harsh comments is a little much to bare. To hear some of the comments saying he is not a good receiver WOW! His football resumes should speaks for him. Giles has not been giving full opportunity at his position to make plays because he has not been targeted like everyone else. Being targeted only 1-2 times a game is not going to cut it to be successful at LSU. I hope none of you have kids in sports because if you did our comments who reflect it in your comments and you would feel some type of way if he would see and hear all the negativity surrounding your child. Coach O didn't give him anything to Jonathan he earned it and the player can confirmed it and they have. God did not bring Jonathan this far to be a failure to LSU but to be victorious

a little advice, stay off these message boards. LSU fans are notoriously brutal. No offense, but why did he transfer from texas tech? Even if he put up big numbers for us there was no way he would match the numbers from texas tech. People forget that these are 20-something kids playing a game, not professional athletes (yet). If it makes you feel any better, most of the people ripping on your talented, athletic, son are overweight neck beards with nothing better to do. I have faith in Giles. Once a tiger, always a tiger.

Mrs Giles please stay far away from this message board. It won't do you any good to read any of this.

As others have said this really isn't a place a mother should hang out because fans are gonna bash no matter what. That being said.....if he wants to be targeted more he should get open more. I hope the best for you and yours!

I think it’s clear bullshite that Coach O went to him in the first place. After giving him a number that he never earned just eat the mistake and allow the dude to finish the year with it. But by Coach O asking him JG already knew why he was asking and I’m sure that played into the decision to change numbers.

im an O fan but once again coach O shows a clear stupidity about how those "special" numbered jerseys must be earned through performance and respect, its not a participation trophy you just hand out to randoms and hope they earn it

Delpit is your best bet by far right now.

It’s a legit question. Living up to that number is no joke. Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette, those guys were legendary. DJ Chark was good and I’m not sure he really lived up to #7.

Pressure? What pressure? Looks like to me he isn't a good WR at all.

This says more about the coach than the player. This coach is unable to evaluate and notice who his playmakers truly are! If he can't do that, how can he adequately coach the team?!

this tradition needs to die

The tradition should have stayed at the db position. Peterson then honey badger. Now should be greedy

It definitely should not go to a 1st year transfer before ever playing a down for LSU

No it should not stay at DB. It started back at LB with Highsmith anyway. The last two players to wear it offensively was Fournette and Chark. Chark averaged almost 22 yards a catch, had over 900 yards from scrimmage, and had 6 total TDs, including rushing and punt return. The problem was giving it to somebody who had done nothing on the field (during the season) to actually earn it. White, Greedy, and Delpit were prime picks for it

maybe he should learn not to fair catch a punt inside the 5 yard line...forget what # he wears...that error cost LSU big time, with field position, giving them their first TD! thanks Giles!

Why don’t they bench him if they’re that unhappy with his play???
