During his press conference on Thursday, head coach Brian Kelly was asked what it's going to take to win games at LSU under his leadership and if the offense will have to score a certain amount of points to compete in the SEC? Per On3:
quote:

“That’s really a difficult question because it depends on what’s happening on the other side of the ball,” Brian Kelly responded.

“If you’re playing an offense that is similar in the sense that they want to run the football and they want to keep it close to the vest and they want to eat up the clock and huddle, then obviously that margin would change.”

“If somebody is trying to push the ball vertically and run fast, then it changes the margin and the way you play. To be tactical and understanding the game is so important as we talk about advanced scouting. Because that’s what I will talk to my coordinators about. At the end of the day, it’s all about how we win the game. Many times people look at your yards per game, what you throw for or how many points you score per game. I’ve always focused myself on one thing and one thing only, and that’s winning.”

The man is the winningest coach in Notre Dame History and has an overall coaching record of 284-97-2. He knows what he is doing.

"How many points per game will LSU need to score to be competitive?” 1 more than their opponent.

Do I understand this right that this will be HIS style here: “If you’re playing an offense that is similar in the sense that they want to run the football and they want to keep it close to the vest and they want to eat up the clock and huddle, then obviously that margin would change.” I mean, at the end of the day I just want to win too. This is much like Les Miles. Not saying it's a bad thing necessarily.

I hope not (close to the vest, milking the clock). My preference would be that he tailors the offense based upon the strength and health of the weapons available and exploits the weaknesses of the opposing defense accordingly. If the other team cannot stop the run, so be it. But continuing to run unsuccessfully into an eight-man front, when you have wide receivers of the caliber of a Jarvis Landry and an OBJ would be a disappointment to watch the next ten years.
