LSU coach Brian Kelly spoke with reporters after spring practice on Thursday and was asked about the decision to move Harold Perkins back to inside linebacker.

Kelly explained that Blake Baker's new defensive structure and voice should help Perkins next season. He added that Kelly and Baker spoke with Perkins, and they all collectively think it's the best spot for him to maximize his potential.

quote:

"The defensive structure is different. You start there," Kelly said. "You have a new voice with Blake Baker coaching the linebackers; that's different. Collectively, Harold, myself, and Blake felt like this was a place that was going to maximize this potential.

"We certainly could keep him at the star/SAM linebacker position, but I think he can impact the defense in so many ways at the WILL linebacker position. We have the ability to get into different looks with him and utilize his ability to be a multidimensional player."

"He knows the clock is ticking; there is a sense of urgency. I think you see a committed player and new voice in Blake Baker. And i believe its his best opportunity to make that next step.

White, was great at WILL or inside because he broke the play down very quick. I haven't seen that from Perkins yet. Maybe White was on a delayed blitz. I think White just identified the play and went to QB. If White played same position in HS he was not learning at LSU. I think Perkins played a lot of positions in HS and the main one was coming off the edge. Perkins is learning to play in a Box. If he learns to play in that Box this year. He could be a top 4 pick.

Baker had Damond Clark playing like Brian Urlacher by the time he left. I trust him to make the right decision here.

I would put him on the edge and send him after the QB every other snap.

Baker is the coach but, I still think this is a bad move. There's plenty will backers in that room.
