Former LSU LB Kelvin Sheppard Receives Big Time Promotion In The NFL

Former LSU linebacker Kelvin Sheppard has reportedly been named the new defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

The Stone Mountain, Ga. native played at LSU from 2006-2010 under former head coach Les Miles. He was a third-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.

He played in the NFL with various teams until 2018 and joined Ed Orgeron's staff at LSU as Director of Player Development in 2020.

He joined the Lions staff in 2021 as an outside linebacker coach and has served as the team's linebacker coach for the past three seasons.

Sheppard will replace Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who was hired as the New York Jets head coach this week.

But haven't we been told over and over that just because you are a good player, that doesn't mean you can be a good coach? LSU could benefit by bringing back a couple of their 'great' players to coach certain positions of need imo. Mawae and Mathieu come to mind!

The Lions are the most cursed team in NFL history. This was their year but their two coordinators were more concerned with their next job than this team. ( still I’m glad Daniels led his redskins to victory though.) Maybe Sheppard can stay focused & finally do what Joe Brady did- stay at Buffalo instead of focusing on a HC job at NO & try to get to the Super Bowl

He kind of got lost in the shuffle in our collective memory. He was after Highsmith and before Minter. He didn't get All American kudos, but he was first team All SEC as a senior. He was a little "stubby" - under 6'2" and 250 at the combine. He was a 200m guy in HS and was quick for a LB. He worked really hard at being the best LB he could be. No surprise he ended up in coaching.

Those teams had so much talent it was easy to overlook a guy who went out and played almost perfect technique executing his role with little flash and plenty of production

14 - his last game was January 7, 2011, Cotton Bowl, led LSU with 8 tackles (4 solo).
