Former North Texas head coach Tony Benford is expected to join LSU's Basketball staff as an assistant coach, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Benford took over the UNT job after former LSU coach Johnny Jones left to take the job in Baton Rouge. He finished with a 62-95 record at UNT and was fired on March 5th.
quote:

Benford was considered one of the top assistant coaches in the country before taking the job at UNT. He worked as the associate head coach at Marquette under Buzz Williams for four years. He also worked as an assistant at Nebraska (2006-08), Arizona State (1998-06) and New Mexico (1992-98).

Benford took over a UNT program at its pinnacle after Jones left for LSU heading into the 2012-13 season, but was unable to maintain its momentum.

I've never loved the optics of hiring somebody who just got fired, even if it's for a lesser position. I worry the players may not have as much respect for them initially. I'm sure my worry is no bug deal irl, though. And honestly, you can't hire an assistant who used to be a head coach without him having been fired. Otherwise, he'd still be a head coach. Forgetting his UNT stint, he has a really nice resume as an assistant and looks to be a very nice hire.

First, I thought folks where trolling on here. After the 7th post, I only have one question: why does an assistant coaches' head coaching record matter?

Does anyone know of any possible recruits that could be in play with him? I can't think of any other reason Wade may want him. Coaches from UNT scare me. :(

Tony Benford was a legit assistant coach before UNT. Just because he didn't have success as a head coach doesn't mean he won't be a solid AC.

So the pinnacle of North Texas basketball is 8-8, and 9-7 in conference play? Jones was there for 12 years, and won the conference once. There wasn't much to live up to, although this guy didn't even live up to those mediocre standards.

Someone tell Coach Wade that UNT is not a proven LSU coaching feeder program.
