LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said Wednesday that infielder O'Neal Lochridge will not be on the Tigers’ 2016-17 roster as he is taking the year off to rehab his back. Per The Advocate:

Lochridge, who suffered a flare up of a stress fracture in his back and is currently in a torso cast for three months, ruled out playing for LSU next season. The St. Thomas More product will continue to attend LSU and focus on his education.

“It’s not that it’s not going to heal, it will eventually heal, but it’s a timing process,” Lochridge told The Advocate on Wednesday. “(With) the uncertainty of exactly when, it’s better that instead of going to a JUCO where I’m not sure if I’ll play or when I’ll play, I want to have the assurance that I get an education that I would get at LSU.”
Lochridge issued this statement on Twitter Wednesday night:

He's applying for medical redshirt. Hope he recovers well and is able to return.

I hope the best for him and a full recover. I don't think that leaving the program is the correct term. He never says that he is leaving the program, just that he can't play next year. Hope to see him back in uniform for 2018

sounds like he is doing exactly what he needs to do...take full advantage of this opportunity to position himself to be successful whether he is on the diamond or behind a desk.
