Phil Mickelson Rips Into PGA Tour For 'Obnoxious Greed'
© Adam Hagy-USA TODAY Sports
The Super Golf League, a Saudi-backed endeavor that has reportedly tabbed Greg Norman as its new commissioner, is looking to lure PGA golf stars away to play for them. Phil Mickelson was asked about the possibility of the SGL stealing golfers and the Tour's various threats to prevent it from happening and blew up about the PGA Tour's "obnoxious greed" in a series of fiery quotes. Per Golf Digest...
quote:

“There are many issues, but that is one of the biggest,” he continued. “For me personally, it’s not enough that they are sitting on hundreds of millions of digital moments. They also have access to my shots, access I do not have. They also charge companies to use shots I have hit. And when I did ‘The Match’—there have been five of them—the tour forced me to pay them $1 million each time. For my own media rights. That type of greed is, to me, beyond obnoxious.”

“Why hasn’t golf had cameras and microphones on players and caddies?” he asked. “Because the player would not benefit, only the tour [so players resist wearing them]. Take this Netflix project that is underway. None of the players are getting paid. But the tour is getting paid a lot of money. As is Augusta National. As is the USGA. But if the players had their own channel, maybe they put up their own content and we start to see golf presented a bit more intimately.

I'm pretty sure Phil isn't saying all of this b/c he's the main concern. Sure he wants what he's owed, but he's one of the richest athletes in the world. Who he's standing up for is the rest of the members on the PGA tour.

I can see both sides of this. Yeah Phil feels like he should have access to product he produces. But that is sort of like someone who writes a program while employed or a scientist who gets a patent. Since they were being paid to create product then the product either belongs solely or partly to the employer. Perhaps a compromise where they both benefit could be worked out.

Phil Mickelson, play 18 holes of pressure free golf with a buddy. Bring home 9 million, complain. Lol yea, he's standing up for the little guy. Because they are the ones whose rights the PGA wants or needs and are playing in exhibitions for near 8 figures.

All the people whining about Phil saying this need to step up their own games if they’re that hurt by it.

Poor Phil, if it wasn't for the PGA maybe he could have made a decent living.

Anyone that makes millions of dollars playing a game has almost no right to complain about the association that provides the forum in which those millions are available. I like Phil, alot but these whining arse professional athletes need a reality check.

He makes that money because people pay to see him play “a game”. It’s called the market. Without the 3 or 4 games that golf has right now, they’re tv ratings, ad buys and attendance plummets.
