Dry cat food is the easiest and very effective
I killed my first 20+ deer with one and both of my sons have killed all of their deer with .243s. I think it’s a great choice for young hunters and ladies
A coworker saw some down around Thornwell

I guided there for a couple of years a few years back. Although I no longer do I’m still friends with several guides and see several other employees often. There is some misinformation in the thread but I’ll clear that up for you.

If it’s a free hunt definitely take it. As in most places you can have great days hunting or days that just flat out suck especially later in the season.
There are a couple of blinds that almost always produce but outside of those you can have some dog days.
A lot of the hunts are saved by teal and or ringnecks. Lots of days there will be very few choice big ducks.
So if you’re paying and think a $2,000.00 a day teal hunt is worth it then you should be happy. If you’re looking for quality big ducks you have about a 25/75 chance of being satisfied
Half of the people that hunt there are business guests that aren’t hunters happy to even see ducks or play hunt so reviews can be misleading

The lodge is nice but no nicer than any other lodge charging these prices. People raving about it just haven’t traveled much. It suffers more than most in this group of lodges in lack of places to relax outside of sitting in your room. If you’re with a group that rented the whole lodge it’s not as bad but if your with a smaller group there will be several like that there at the same time and the lodge offers very little space to separate from others especially if the weather is not ideal.
It was getting pretty run down but the new owner put some money in it which has helped but it still needs more.

The food has suffered in the opinion of almost everyone I’ve heard from since the new owner took over. For someone in the restaurant business that’s disappointing but then again his restaurants a pretty mid as their success if more based on location and a captive customer base. Very generic menu especially considering you’re in Louisiana a state known for food and you’re being served cookie cutter items from Sysco. You can definitely eat worse but it should be much much better especially for the daily rate you pay to be there.

Memberships - the new owner added 6 memberships. They are building a new lodge and 6 cabins for these members. The cost is a crazy $300,000.00 per year. It really makes you wonder how someone who has that kind of disposable income made their money and still could decide that a membership there is justifiable. Way too many restrictions for anyone with money and hunting sense to buy into. Do you know how many trips you can take to places just as nice or nicer for a fraction of that money?
Realtree is out as they are smart enough to realize you can’t justify that deal. So yes, Drew lost his truck and now the members and owners family and friends hunt the deer instead of mostly Realtree. There are nice deer there but it will suffer with the current format. Realtree was smart and not greedy so they’d let them grow. When members are paying what they are they will pressure them more especially when it’s a year with bad duck hunting. The gator hunting has already went from good to poor. They have a few good days of dove hunting but nothing special most of the season.

Anyone who can afford to pay that really should take an hour to do some research and they could do so much more with way less money spent. Most of these people aren’t really hunters though and I don’t see this being a sustainable model long term.

These memberships are also going to put increased pressure on the duck hunting there as it takes away their ability to rest as many ducks. This is the first year they will have more than one member so we will see how much that pisses off the people that rent the whole lodge and in the past had the whole farm to themselves. Some full time employees told me that they added new blinds across the north side to keep the members as far away as possible from the regular hunters there. I can tell you from experience that most days their hunting will be poor.

TLDR= like most places hunting is hit or miss. Most days you will kill mostly teal.
If you really want badass duck hunting go to Canada in most cases for cheaper. You’ll kill a tremendous amount of mallards and pintails as well as speckled belly and Canada geese as well as all the snows you want to shot. You can go to Mexico for the same or cheaper and kill way more ducks and the lodges are much more fun.
Missouri, Kansas and the Dakotas offer much better values too.
Honey Brake can be good but there are many other places that are a better value and just as nice or nicer

I hope you have a great hunt. For your next one do a little research and enjoy something different. Good luck!
