The difference is those monks did it out of deep religious belief and the persecution of them by the corrupt government in Saigon. The airman was just a head case that wanted attention for himself, no matter what he was jabbering about....
This is the kind dumbass thing that taxes your brain and patience. The only cure for this is a trip to Ruth's for a nice big NY strip. Medium with a side of onion rings....

It's really long but the storylines are really, really involved. Very much worth the read or listen. Book was like 900 pages if I remember right. ...
To say this guy had sever mental problems would be a gross understatement. His ridiculous proclamations were just a "look at me everyone" as if lighting himself on fire wasn't enough. ...
