re: Question for the old time LSU fans
Posted by Cowboy Tiger on 5/10/22 at 2:50 am to SoFla Tideroller
I was at NLU about the same time Duper was at Northwestern. I don't know the whole story. However, I think Duper was more of a track guy to begin with even at Northwestern.
They had some really talented guys through there at that time. I believe they won the NCAA 400M Relay one year. I think that relay had Duper, Joe Delaney, a rookie of the year RB with the Chiefs before he drowned (from Haughton), a guy named Victor Oatis (Winnsboro) who also played a little NFL wide receiver (Vikings as I recall), and I believe a kid from Airline in Bossier City. It has been a long time, but I think I have my facts straight.

re: Why can't Arkansas be a football powerhouse?

My son and I had a conversation about this recently at least in the context of a comparison to LSU. He graduated from Arkansas. "My response to him: 45 minutes south of Fayettevile, you find Fort Smith. About that far south of Baton Rouge you find New Orleans". Their football playing population doesn't provide for much of a recruiting base.

yep. Compared to the 70's or 80's, its disgusting.
I'm near retirement. I grew up in Bossier but have lived in DFW the last 40 years or so. I spoke with a Shreveport fireman recently and his direct quote (which hit home) was "Don't retire here. This aint the same place you grew up in". If it were, I would probably come back "home"!

Me too!
In person, I saw Doug Flutie against Houston in the Cotton bowl, Bo Jackson against Texas A & M in the Cotton bowl and of course Joe Burrow numerous times.
I attended NLU and worked for John David Crow (winner at A&M in late 50's). He was a tough old fellow.

I worked as a lifeguard that summer making about $3.50. My brother worked blowing insulation for a homebuilder making 25 cents an hour less. He still resents me over that summer.
My brother and I shared a 1963 Plymouth Belvedere around that time with no A/C. It had push button automatic transmission. I think my dad bought it used for $250.

I stood in line behind a half dozen of them in a precinct recently.

I don't know if it will or not! However, you forgot one cause if it does! Legal immigration will probably be the number one factor.
I work on a corporate campus in DFW with approximately 12,000 employees. Mostly Indian food is served in the cafeteria to please the inhabitants.
I think legal immigration is currently underrated as a problem for this country.

I'm pretty sure that West Monroe played Midland Lee during at least one of those seasons and beat them pretty good.

was born and raised in Louisiana listening to John Ferguson and Jim Hawthorne with my dad.
I listened to most every game I could on the radio as a North Louisiana kid growing up (yes, I'm also a cowboys fan so hate away). In those days most of the LSU games weren't on TV.
My dad took me to my first game as a 9-10 year old in Tiger Stadium around 1969-70 and I was hooked! However, I worked my way through school at NLU.
It always gets under my skin a little bit when I run across LSU graduates that think I'm less of a fan than they are. Many are LSU grads because their Mom and Dad paid for it.
I wore an LSU cap to a high school ball game last year in DFW. After a short conversation about LSU Football with a guy, he made it clear to me that he "actually went to LSU" in a condescending manner.
To all of you that think you are better than myself because you actually went there. Just so you know; I'll be at the Miami game on labor day weekend wearing my LSU hat whether you like it or not!

I agree. I do believe there are three or four more right there with him. Unfortunately, with each passing day I believe more and more that W. Bush ranks right there with LBJ, Obama, Carter and Wilson.
I voted for Bush twice even though I lived in Texas and I thought he was a poor governor. Unfortunately, I probably would again given the choices. In Trump's words, "very sad".
Bush had thousands killed needlessly and grew the welfare state. He did nothing about illegal immigration. He upset the balance of power in the middle east much like Carter. Hell, pretty much his first act in office was to "reach across the the aisle" to none other than Teddy Kennedy and pass "no child left behind". The SOB is a damn joke.
