I know I'm late to this but as a former Drum Captain at LSU and current Percussion Director I'll throw some more info in.
First, it's totally possible to make a drum your Freshman year. Plenty of people have done it, including me. You just need to show up prepared and have hands.

I had a pair of these double taped throughout most of the 2004 season. I would use them only in the stands. They made the Hardimons we had feel like feathers.

You realize this comes from the Athletic Department and not the Band Department right? Travel budget for Tiger Band is all Athletics. It's Alleva. Just like he didn't want any opposing bands performing in Tiger Stadium the last couple of years....

We went with the CareCredit card. Just like a credit card, we've had friends use it before. 6 months no interest as long as we pay it off. Now if I can just find a full time job we'll be set!...
