re: Cajun Cookoff Menu Ideas
Posted by Ragnar on 9/23/21 at 1:23 pm
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'd love to do a sauce piquant or etoufee or something like that bc those are my favorite cajun dishes but we'll basically be cooking from a tailgate setup so I'm trying to keep it somewhat simple. Should've mentioned that originally. It's not a super serious competition (more for a good cause) I'd just love to win being from Louisiana. And it doesn't have to be technically cajun, really just Louisiana food.
Brisket, how many oysters does that butter mixture usually cover?

Cajun Cookoff Menu Ideas
Posted by Ragnar on 9/23/21 at 11:03 am
I'm cooking in a cajun cookoff for a fundraiser in Oklahoma next week and am looking for some ideas to set our team apart from everyone else. There will be some other Louisiana transplants there cooking so it's not like it'll be an easy win.
There are no menu limitations. We've heard there are always jambalayas and boudin, and sometimes a pastalaya or gumbo cooked. We are doing a big pastalaya, some boudin, probably frying some beignets, and I'm thinking about doing chargrilled oysters as the kicker to set us apart. Looking for advice / feedback on the oysters and some other ideas.

Fridge Ice Maker Issue
Posted by Ragnar on 9/1/21 at 9:53 am
I have a newer french door refrigerator and the ice maker has stopped producing ice. I've searched online and all I've found is "make sure the lever switch is on" and "make sure the main water valve is open". After that everything says call a professional. The switch is on, I checked the main valve, and I know it's not a water issue because the water dispenser is working fine. I can also hear the pump turning on so I don't think its a pump issue. I haven't taken off the cover on the back of the fridge yet because I'd have to take out what must be 186 screws to get in it so I figured I'd come here first. Trying to avoid getting ripped off by an appliance repairman. Anyone else had a similar issue and have a fix?
Why were we at normal depth on that ground ball?!
Posted by Ragnar on 6/12/21 at 8:56 pm
With runners on 2nd and 3rd. We should at the least had the corners in. No force anywhere and tying run on 3rd. Could argue the entire infield should have been in.

Seems like a great thing but the increase is due to all the progs moving there from California and other blue states.
re: MSM Turf Herbicide
Posted by Ragnar on 4/26/21 at 3:51 pm
Not to hijack the thread but is a surfactant critical when using MSM? I treated my yard with it about a month ago and after 2 weeks hardly any weeds were dying. After 3 weeks I came back and spot treated with Roundup because I was tired of waiting. I definitely over did it with the measurements and still nothing died. I've heard nothing but good things about it here so just trying to figure out where I went wrong.
re: Grass ID
Posted by Ragnar on 4/26/21 at 3:48 pm
I think it could be quackgrass. Tough to tell from the pictures but it looks very similar to what I dealt with in my yard.
TD Thread Link
One indicator of quackgrass is clasping auricles - I could only find 2 auricles in your second pic and they looked like they might be clasped. It grew much quicker and much taller than the rest of my grass and started to take over pretty quick. The surefire way to know is to let it grow out and make a seedhead.
The only way to get rid of quackgrass is to dig it up or roundup it. I chose roundup (they have complex root structures) then fertilized heavy to crowd out the smaller bunches of it that I missed. Good luck.

re: Labrador ACL/CCL Tear
Posted by Ragnar on 2/4/21 at 8:28 pm
Just went through this but my lab wasn’t quite 2 when he tore his first one. Doc told us we should probably get it fixed or he’d be likely to tear the other one. He was still happy as could be and would run full speed fetching and playing just like normal so I put it off. Got quoted $2500 for TPLO. They said if I ever wanted him to be able to hunt (which was the plan and I was mid training when it happened) I should get it fixed so I decided he’d just be a house dog instead of a hunting dog. Plus he would have to be kennel bound pretty much all the time for about 6 weeks and I didn’t have the heart to do it to him when he was still so happy and active.
Well after about 6 months he tore the other one. For about 3 months after that he was still running and all like normal, he’d just be a little slow to get up the next day after running hard. After that his quality of life started being affected and he’d limp pretty bad most days so I decided to get the surgery. Took another 3 months to get it scheduled and all. Had both legs done at once, was given an estimate between $3000-$3700 and it ended up costing $3200. I’m actually on week 2 of the 12 week recovery right now and it’s not easy. I’m sure it would be easier only having 1 leg done but it would still be tough. Definitely do your research on the recovery before you commit so you know what you’re getting into.
I went TPLO rather than lateral suture bc I was told and read that with big breeds it’s coming for the lateral suture to fail.
I should also mention the vet I had it done at has an agreement with some top notch surgeon in the area where he comes in once or twice a year and does surgeries for like half price to help people out. That’s why mine was so cheap. I read stories online of people paying over $10,000 for a double TPLO. I’m in Oklahoma btw. I could go on and on about it so if you have any other questions just ask.

Question on Insulin Secretagogues / GDAs
Posted by Ragnar on 6/24/20 at 11:46 am
I've been doing a lot of reading on insulin and it's effects for bodybuilding, and thinking about trying a secratagogue / GDA the next time I bulk. No way I'd do injections so I'm not too worried about hypoglycemia or some of the other negative side effects. Just wondering if anyone on the board has any experience with them, if they work, or if I'd be just as well off eating the right things at the right times, controlling insulin release naturally.
I'm specifically looking at Insuligen from masupps ( LINK). 777, I know you recommend Mike's mk-677 supp, I've actually used a couple bottles and have had great results, wondering if you know anything about his insulin supp. I know his secratagogue has some extra stuff in it to provide benefits like preventing fat gain that is typically associated with insulin increases, wondering how legit those claims are. It also claims to keep blood glucose at natural levels on the low end (because it's glucose dependent), so you don't have to worry about hypoglycemia.
Thanks in advance.

re: Yard Help - Multiple Issues (Pics) - UPDATE
Posted by Ragnar on 5/18/20 at 12:07 pm
Update. So after treating what I thought was crabgrass for a week and nothing happening I let it grow out to identify it by the seed head. What I found was that I have Quackgrass taking over, not Crabgrass. This video helped a lot in eliminating what I was looking at Youtube. I also found that I had some Foxtail, Carpetgrass, and Crabgrass as well. The little bit of Crabgrass died with the treatment I applied.
After researching Quackgrass I learned it's a perennial so I couldn't count on it dying off with heat and it has a complex root system so I couldn't just pull it. Unfortunately there is no selective herbicide for it so I ordered some Roundup QuickPro and sprayed all the Quackgrass, Foxtail, and Carpetgrass yesterday. I'm going to wait 2 weeks to reseed with Bermuda and apply a shite ton of Milorganite that I bought a couple weeks ago.
I got the Roundup from DoMyOwn.com, a website I found that sells professional grade stuff. I'm going to order some pesticides from there soon and start treating my house on my own rather than pay someone that has the good stuff.
I aerated my thin spots as ronk suggested and changed up my watering cycle and am waiting to see the effects on the Bermuda that didn't get hit with Roundup. I have been mowing on a very low setting to cut down all the Quackgrass, which I found out is really bad for the Bermuda. Once the Quackgrass and everything else is dead I'm going to start mowing much higher which should help out the thin spots as well. Hopefully it will all come together and I can somewhat salvage a nice lawn for the summer.
Just wanted to update so if someone else has the same problem in the future they can find some answers. Thanks for the help.

Yard Help - Multiple Issues (Pics) - UPDATE
Posted by Ragnar on 4/27/20 at 1:59 pm
I have several issues going on with my yard and am in need of major help.
Some background: In Oklahoma, house was built in 2016, I bought it in 2018. Pretty sure I have a Bermuda base but now have several different grasses growing. I have an in ground sprinkler system and just turned it back on 2 weeks ago. Have it going about 5 minutes per station right now every other day and we've been getting a lot of rain lately.
I'm a first time homeowner so all of this is new to me and I've already made some mistakes. Last year in trying to get my yard greener I spread some tall fescue seeds on both the front and back yards (I just went to Home Depot online and bought whatever had the best reviews). I signed up for a yearly yard treatment plan - 4 weed & feed treatments and 3 fertilizer treatments (theses spray treatments are a huge thing up here, everyone gets them). I had a weed & feed treatment about a month ago now. The weeds were very bad before they sprayed and they all disappeared, but now I have a few new, different type of weeds popping up so I spread my own Scotts Weed & Feed yesterday.
My only neighbor (I live on a corner lot) could care less about their yard and basically has a clover patch going so I know that's not helping me at all. My house backs up to a huge ag field that the farmer just lets grow up a few times a year so I'm pretty sure I'm getting some seeds in my yard from whatever grass he let's grow up back there.
I'll number the issues to make them easier to refer to.
Front Yard:
1. I all of a sudden have bunches of this grass popping up in the front yard. It grows much quicker than the rest of the yard and is much greener. After some research I'm guessing rye grass? How can I get rid of it? Just pull up each bunch of it or is there something I can treat it with to kill it but not the bermuda base?
2. My front yard is fairly sloped away from the house in all directions. In the corner of the front yard closest to the street my grass is just dying. I have been making sure it gets plenty of water so I know that's not the issue. I think I've seen on this board before that a fungus can do this? Thoughts & suggestions?
3. I have oddly shaped holes popping up in the front yard. The first 2 have been there for a few months now and I just found a 3rd yesterday, it's brand new. The existing holes are just getting worse. Any idea what could be causing these? Sticking my hand down in the holes they are pretty damp. My initial thought was a sprinkler line has busted underground and is causing the ground to saturate, but the lines have been empty until 2 weeks ago. Could it just be the ground settling since the house is still fairly new?
Back Yard:
4. In the back yard I have several different grasses growing. Some of it is the same grass that I have up front, closer to the fence there is another type that is thicker and bigger bunches, the light green in the first and 3rd pictures I think is some tall fescue that took hold, then whatever the 4th picture is. Again, is there anyway to get rid of these grasses without killing the base?
5. Then lastly in the back my yard slopes up to the fence that separates the ag field behind it. On the slope along the entire property line the grass is disappearing and turning up bare spots.
I know it's a lot but thanks in advance for any help provided. Last year I worked out of town all spring and summer so my yard looked like shite and this year I said I was going to get ahead of it and have a beautiful lawn. I thought I was on the right track then it seems like in the last couple weeks it's all gone to shite.

If you and the wife were in a heated argument, what would piss her off more? Interrupting her and saying
Shut the frick up!
OR
Shut your mouth girl, daddy's talking
I think if I told her shut your mouth daddy's talking she'd be so shocked the fight might end right there.
