New Orleans to Rome, Venice to NYC, and NYC to NO

$875 a person!!!!!

The money I saved by waiting and doing my homework, I decided to have a 2-day layover in NYC.

I learned instead of trying to book a flight from NO to Rome and from Venice back to NO, I broke it down:

Round trip NO to JFK
Round trip JFK to Rome
One-way Venice to Rome

This saved me about $1400 off if I would have just did it all together. I do have a 6 hour layover in JFK. I could have knocked it down to 4 hours, but I didn't want to call it close since you have to be at the international gate 3 hours before flight. So that would have only given me one hour to retrieve luggage and get to next gate.

Using some of that savings to stay two nights in NYC (I've never been)

That's not true but ya, playing it safe is always better than fricking up the whole vacation.

Do you have lounge access? We always go into the Centurion Lounge at JFK. It's pretty comfortable.

Think of the great people watching opportunities at JFK

Long layovers aren't so bad if you plan for them. Good book, find a decent restaurant in your part of the airport with a decent bar. Also you won't feel rushed at all going to your next leg of your trip. Would much rather a longer layover than a short one where I'm feeling rushed and stressed about time. Not the way I want to start a great vacation.

Enjoy your trip

I actually learned about the 3-hour international gate time here.

If you have Chase or Hyatt points, NYC Park Hyatt has great redemption value. It still cost a lot though.

Idk if you have a place in Rome, but we stayed in the Splendide Royal in October. Very nice place with great views.

My bad. It's at LGA. That's what we flew out of last time.

We had that, I found a little bar and sat had a few drinks, ate a decent meal, and killed all of the time. Was great because it helped me sleep on the flight.

You can’t mess with my mind like that! I’ve never used the LGA (or any other) because I’m always anxious to get through security. I’ve wore out the self serve espresso machine in the Delta lounge though.

That's just airport/airline speak.

I've gotten to my international departure plane/gate as it is boarding. Of course, if you check bags and all that, I believe the latest you can do that is about an hour before departure. They pad the number because they don't want customers complaining and messing up operations by requesting all types of services near departure.

I don't check bags so I've never really had to care about all that, and just be there for boarding.

Yeah, 3 hours isn’t necessary. But if you’re buying a round trip to New York, and a separate ticket to Italy, it’s not a bad idea to have a lot of padding, because If the first flight is late, then you risk missing the second one. I don’t know if an airline would rebook you if the first leg is with a different airline?
