Rep520th - good summary of Cannon Beach. Astoria is a half hour north, if you want a bigger city.
But, yeah, Cannon Beach is great for R&R. I wouldn't recommend it for a staging area to see the state or for big city stuff.

Cannon Beach was the best vacation my wife and I have ever had.
We both have a lot of work stress so neither one of us wants to be running on vacation. In CB, we spent entire days with no plan, just wandering up and down the coast or the beach.
The town itself is quaint, but there isn't much to do beyond walk around for a few hours and browse art. The amount of relaxing stuff outdoors is tremendous. There are 4 or 5 extraordinarily beautiful aces in 15 min, and they all mix short and long hikes. We enjoyed that. If you want to hike, you can. If you want a 50 foot walk to beauty, that is there too.

Cannon Beach for the win.
I’d spend half your time on the Oregon coast and the other in Portland.

Many other things to do, if you have time. The Wallowa mountains are a little known gem, and you have to drive along the Columbia River Gorge to get there. If the weather allows, there is Crater Lake. Smith Rock, Silver Falls, and Cove Palisades are other non-beach destinations. Some of these places are close enough to Portland to make them an easy day trip.

Go river rafting down the klackmas river, you can find an outfitter to set it all up, one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.
Lots of hiking, biking, etc. type of stuff to do if you’re into it.
Go see Multanoma (however you spell it) falls, really beautiful and has a path you can hike up to the top if you want.
Basically spend as little time in the actual city of Portland as possible. It’s just like any other big city with a lot of homeless people and as someone above said, they’re more likely to stop you and beg for money than a lot of other places. They did have a cool farmers market area on certain days to buy locally made and grown stuff but that was it.

Farmers Market is on Saturday, downtown by Portland State. The Saturday Market is more of a flea market, and it is downtown on the river.
Downtown Portland is actually, pretty nice. Yes there are homeless people, but they are concentrated in certain areas and don't bother you too much. They try to keep the homeless people away from the areas where all the restaurants/bars/breweries/venues are, so they end up near the river. If you want to see homeless people, go to the Voodoo Donuts on 3rd and walk around.
Pearl District is really nice. Mississippi Ave is really nice. Division street is really nice. NE Alberta St is really nice. All these neighborhoods have different vibes and all have good breweries, restaurants, food carts, music venues, etc. Uber/Lyft is your friend when bouncing around.
