Weekend NY trip in August

In August, I’m taking my son to New York to watch the Astros vs. Yankees. We plan to fly in early Friday afternoon to catch the 7 PM game that evening. Probably the afternoon on Saturday as well.
Does anyone have pointers on where to stay? It’ll just be a quick trip with me, my son, and my dad. While we’re there, I’d like to visit the 9/11 Memorial, Times Square, and maybe a couple of other tourist spots.
What’s a good hotel location that’s convenient to both Manhattan and Yankee Stadium? Also, where can we find the best NY pizza?
Any advice is appreciated!

We stay at the Sheraton Times Square and ride the subway to Yankee Stadium. One trip on the subway we met a man who had not missed a game since the early 60’s.

For Sunday brunch, go have rooftop brunch at the graduate hotel on Roosevelt Island, it has some of the best views in the city and is a well kept secret among the locals. You will take the tram cable car over the river onto the island.
Super cool experiences that you won’t find anywhere in the south.

I was last at that Sheraton way too long ago, but the location can't be beat. I also camped at the Marriott Times Square (a ton of rooms). If you do anything "Times Square" for a hotel, beg for a room that doesn't face Times Square. You don't want to end up stacking things on the curtains to keep them in place to try and keep the light out. The Asians do properly fitted blackout curtains, the USA, um no.

L’Industrie or St. John’s on Bleeker for pizza. Both in West Village (the original L’Industrie is in Brooklyn)

Let me add, I’m not looking for a fine dining establishment. It’ll be me, my dad, and 12 year old….both of whom don’t care about atmosphere and beer. Just sloppy, authentic NY pizza.
I want to find something locals go to where they probably haven’t cleaned the place in 15 years but are still open because the food is so good.

If you're in the East Village or LES, I enjoy Jonny's Pizza, Joe & Pat's, Old Fashion Pizzeria, and Village Square. There are also multiple "$.99" pizza places that are, like, $1.50 now. You'll see them all over, but always worth the price.
If you're in the West Village, John's, L'Industrie, and Joe's are going to be the popular spots. L'Industrie's West Village location is a bit of a mess with crowds. I'd much rather send you across the bridge into Williamsburg for the original location. Plus, there are better pizza spots nearby (e.g. FiNi, Ace, Best, Vinnie's, etc.). If you're up for a short walk across McCarren, can also stop for a pie at Chrissy's. Has a bit of a cult following on social media, but one of the few 'viral' food spots I've actually liked. Price sort of sucks, but worth getting once.
ETA: In general, there are New York threads almost bi-weekly. Recommend doing a search and reading through the many recommendations, both for pizza and accommodations.

There are food carts everywhere which serve thin crust cheese pizza for $3 per slice. It is damn tasty... once I had some NY thin crust pizza, never went back to thick or "hand tossed" crust.

If you're gonna do the Bronx for the game, Times Square and 9/11 stuff, just pick whatever hotel you like in Midtown Manhattan. For pizza, our spot is New York Pizza Suprema right near MSG.
