My wife saw a flight to St Croix for a really, really nice rate pretty far in the future for our anniversary.
I know jackshit about the Virgin Islands.
Is St Croix alright to stay on the whole time?
Is it worth it to take a ferry or puddle jumper to St Thomas or St John instead?
I know St John is popular on this board but I know nothing.
This would be a 6 night trip

I lived on St. Croix for about 9 months in 2014 while consulting on the demobilization of HOVENSA (oil refinery / storage terminal). I've been back twice since then but also combo'd my trips by staying part of the time in St. John.
Ultimately that is my suggestion. Stay a few nights on St. Croix and then take the seaplane to St. John. STJ is more beautiful and has better beaches than STT and STX. It's also an easier jumping off point for day trips to the BVI's, which I HIGHLY recommend. Particularly Jost van Dyke (White Bay) and Virgin Gorda for The Baths.
On STX, stay at The Buccaneer and you will not be disappointed. The culinary scene in nearby Christiansted is solid. Do a guided day trip to Buck Island and snorkel the reef there in the underwater marine park. One other must-do is a night time bioluminescent kayak tour. You can only do this in St. Croix and a handful of other places in the Caribbean.

If you have the budget to fly to/stay on Virgin Gorda or Tortola, don’t think twice.

Consider Turks and Caicos instead...
